성 실베스테르 1세(Saint Sylvester I)는 신부의 아들로 태어났다. 그는 314년 1월 31일 교황 성 멜키아데(Pope Saint Melchiades)를 계승해 교황으로 선출되었다.
Saint Sylvester I was born as the son of a priest. He was elected Pope on January 31, 314, succeeding Pope Saint Melchiades.
실베스테르(Sylvester)의 이름의 뜻은 ‘나무, 숲’을 의미한다.
The name Sylvester means ‘tree, forest.’
그 후 그는 교회 역사에서 매우 중요한 시기에 21년간 교황직을 수행했지만 그의 생애나 활동에 대해서 정확하게 알려진 것이 없다.

아리우스주의(Aranismus)는 아리우스가 주장한 것으로 성부와 성자가 동일한 본질이며 동격인 존재라는 삼위일체론(Trinity)을 부정하고 그리스도는 성부가 세계의 구원을 위해 만든 도구에 불과하다는 것이다.
