상스의 성녀 골룸바(Saint Columba of Sens)는 에스파냐에서 귀족 가문에서 태어나 16세 때에 ‘비둘기’라는 뜻을 지닌 골룸바(Columba)라는 세례명을 받았다.
Saint Columba of Sens was born into a noble family in Spain and was baptized Columba, meaning ‘dove’, at the age of 16.
그녀는 아우렐리아누스 황제의 박해를 피하려고 다른 그리스도인들과 함께 오늘날의 프랑스 지방으로 피신했다.
She fled with other Christians to what is now France to avoid persecution by Emperor Aurelian.
황제는 그녀가 자기 아들과 결혼하기를 원했으나 그녀가 거부하였다. 분노한 황제는 그녀를 원형 경기장 근처 매춘을 위한 감옥에 가두었다.
The emperor wanted her to marry his son, but she refused. The enraged emperor imprisoned her in a prostitution prison near the amphitheater.
그녀가 감옥에 있을 때 한 간수가 그녀를 강간하려고 하자 원형 경기장에 있던 한 마리의 곰이 나타나 간수를 공격하고 그녀를 구해주었다.
While she was in prison, a guard tried to rape her, and a bear from the amphitheater appeared, attacked the guard, and saved her.
황제는 성녀 골룸바(Saint Columba)를 화형에 처하려고 했으나 억수 같은 비가 쏟아져 불을 꺼버렸다.
The emperor tried to burn Saint Columba at the stake, but torrential rain put out the fire.
결국, 그녀는 상스라는 도시에서 그녀는 참수형으로 순교했다. 전승에 의하면 앞을 보지 못하던 아우베르투스(Aubertus)라는 사람이 그녀에게 전구를 청해 눈을 뜨게 되었다.
In the end, she was martyred by beheading in the city of Sens. According to tradition, a blind man named Aubertus asked her for help and opened his eyes.
그래서 그는 즉시 성녀 골룸바(Saint Columba)가 처형된 곳으로 가서 그녀의 시신을 수습해 정성껏 장례를 치렀다.
So he immediately went to the place where Saint Columba was executed, retrieved her body, and held a sincere funeral.
