성 시메온(Saint Simeon) 로마제국의 속주인 시스(Sis)에서 목동의 아들로 태어나 세례를 받았다.

Saint Simeon was born as the son of a shepherd in Sis, a province of the Roman Empire, and was baptized.

 

그는 13살 떄 환시를 체험했는데 후에 그 환시가 자신이 기둥 위에서 생활하게 될 예언이었다고 스스로 해석했다.

He experienced a vision at the age of 13, which he later interpreted as a prophecy that he would end up living on a pillar.

 

그는 에우세보나(Eusebona) 수도원에 입회했으나 더 철저한 고행 생활을 하고자 412년 수도원을 나와 독수자(Solitary)로서 은수 생활을 시작했다.

He entered the Eusebona monastery, but left the monastery in 412 to live a more thorough ascetic life and began a hermit life as a solitary.

 

그리고 3년 뒤에 근처 칼라아트 세만(Qalaat Seman) 산 정상으로 올라갔다. 그가 산 위로 올라간 것은 그의 성덕 이야기에 감동한 군중들이 너무 많이 몰려들었기 때문이었다.

And three years later, he climbed to the top of nearby Qalaat Seman Mountain. The reason he went up the mountain was because so many people were moved by the story of his holiness.

 

422년경 그는 세속을 완전히 떠나 하늘 가까이에서 살고 싶은 마음으로 돌기둥 위에 올라갔다. 그가 올라가서 고행 생활을 하던 돌기둥은 모두 네 개였는데, 마지막으로 올라간 돌기둥은 무려 20m 높이에 달했다.

Around 422, he climbed a stone pillar with the desire to completely leave the world and live close to heaven. There were a total of four stone pillars that he climbed and practiced asceticism, and the last stone pillar he climbed was a whopping 20 meters high. 

 

그는 가로세로 2m를 넘지 않는 돌기둥 꼭대기의 좁은 공간에서 눈이 오나 비가 오나 고행 생활을 계속했다.

He continued his ascetic life in a narrow space at the top of a stone pillar that was no more than 2 meters wide, whether it was snowing or raining.

 

거의 잠을 자지 않거나 조금씩 자는 고행을 비롯해 야생동물의 가죽옷을 입고 지내며 40년 가까이 사순절마다 하루도 빠짐없이 완전한 단식을 실천했다.

In addition to the asceticism of sleeping little or little, he wore wild animal skin clothing and practiced complete fasting every single day of Lent for nearly 40 years.

 

돌기둥 위에 사는 성인에 대한 소문이 널리 퍼져 각지에서 사람들이 몰려왔다. 그는 매일 두 차례 찾아오는 이들을 위해 기둥 위에서 설교했다.

The rumor about the saint living on the stone pillar spread widely and people came from all over. He preached from a pillar twice a day for those who came.

 

그로 인해 수많은 사람이 개종하거나 잃었던 신앙심을 되찾았고 고위 성직자와 황제까지도 그의 말을 경청하며 자문을 청하기도 했다.

As a result, many people converted or regained their lost faith, and even high-ranking priests and the emperor listened to him and asked for advice. 

 

최초의 기둥성인(Stylites)였던 그가 선종한 후 그를 본받고자 많은 이들이 기둥 위에 올라가 고행 생활에 도전했다.

After he, the first pillar saint (Stylites), passed away, many people attempted to follow his example by climbing on pillars and leading a life of asceticism.
