성녀 파라일다(Saint Pharaildis)는 벨기에의 겐트(Gent)에서 공작의 딸로 태어났다. 그녀는 남몰래 하느님께 동정 서원을 했지만 자신의 소망과는 달리 어느 부유한 사람과 결혼했다.

Saint Pharaildis was born in Ghent, Belgium, as the daughter of a duke. She secretly made a vow of virginity to God, but against her wishes, she married a wealthy man.

 

그러나 그녀가 끝까지 그와 함께 살기를 거부하자 남편은 늦은 밤에 성당을 방문한다는 이유로 그녀를 학대하였다.

However, when she refused to live with him until the end, her husband abused her for visiting the church late at night.

 

그러나 남편이 죽을 때까지 하느님께서는 그녀를 잘 보살펴 주셨다. 과부가 되었을 때도 그녀는 처녀였으며 자선활동에 헌신하였다.

But God took good care of her until her husband died. Even when she became a widow, she remained a virgin and devoted herself to charity.

 

그녀의 죽음에 대해서 잘 알려진 것이 없다. 그러나 전설에 따르면 그녀는 우물이 솟아나게 하여 그 물로 아픈 아이들을 치료했으며 비참한 여인이 숨긴 빵을 돌로 바꾸었다고 한다.

Not much is known about her death. But legend has it that she caused a well to spring forth, whose waters healed sick children, and who turned the bread hidden by a miserable woman into a stone.

 

그래서 성녀 파라일다(Saint Pharaildis)는 소아 질환과 학대 피해자들의 수호성인으로 공경받고 있다.

Therefore, Saint Pharaildis is revered as the patron saint of victims of childhood illness and abuse.
