알렉산드리아의 성녀 신클레티카(Syncletica of Alexandria)는 부유한 부모에게서 태어났다. 그녀는 아름다운 미모와 교양을 갖추었기에 청혼자들이 많았다.
Saint Syncletica of Alexandria was born to wealthy parents. Because she was beautiful and cultured, she had many suitors.
그러나 그녀는 일찍부터 천상 정배(spouse)만을 위하여 살기로 결심했다. 그녀에 대한 청혼 문제로 청년들끼리 큰 싸움이 벌어지기도 했다.
But she decided early on to live only for her heavenly spouse. A big fight broke out among the young men over the issue of proposing to her.
그래서 그녀는 자신을 자신을 자기의 최대 적으로 생각하고 단식과 고행을 통해서 내적 성장을 위해서 노력하였다.
So she thought of herself as her own worst enemy and strived for internal growth through fasting and asceticism.
부모님과 사별한 그녀는 자신의 뜻을 실천하기 시작했다. 우선 그녀는 모든 재산을 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 준 뒤 세속을 포기하고 하느님꼐 봉헌한다는 표시로 머리를 자르고 은둔생활을 시작했다.
After losing her parents, she began to put her will into practice. First, she gave away all her possessions to the poor, then cut her hair as a sign of giving up the world and consecrating herself to God, and began a life of seclusion.
그녀의 거룩한 삶은 곧 지역 주민들의 관심을 끌게 되었고 점차 많은 여성들이 그녀와 함께 그리스도 안에서 제자로 살아가게 되었다. 그녀는 84세로 선종하였다.
Her holy life soon attracted the attention of local residents, and more and more women came to live with her as disciples in Christ. She died at the age of 84.
