델프트의 성녀 제르트루다(Saint Gertrude of Delft)는 네덜란드에서 농부 부모에게서 태어났다.

Saint Gertrude of Delft was born in the Netherlands to farmer parents.

 

경건한 삶을 살아왔던 그녀는 약혼자에게 버림받은 후 델프트에서 베긴회(beguinage)의 회원이 되었다.

She, who had lived a pious life, became a member of the beguinage in Delft after being abandoned by her fiancé.  

 

베긴(Beguine)은 수녀는 아니지만 독립된 집에서 공동으로 수도생활을 하며 정결과 순종서원을 하는 사람들이다. 그리고 그들은 청빈 서원은 하지 않고 2~3명씩 함께 생활하며 자선활동을 했다.

Beguines are not nuns, but are people who live communally as a monk in an independent house and take vows of chastity and obedience. And they did not take a vow of poverty, but lived together in groups of two or three and did charity work. 

 

그녀는 이 공동체 생활하면서 충분히 묵상할 수 있는 기회를 얻을 수 있었다. 그리스도의 수난에 대해 큰 신심을 가지고 있었던 그녀는 1304년 주님 수난 성 금요일에 그리스도의 다섯 성흔을 받았다.

Living in this community gave her ample opportunity to meditate. She had great devotion to the Passion of Christ and received the five stigmata of Christ on Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord in 1304. 

 

그녀가 십자가 앞에 엎드려 있는 동안 그녀의 손, 발, 옆구리에서 붉은 피가 계속 흘러나왔다. 그녀는 이 은총이 거두어지도록 하느님께 간청했다.

As she lay prostrate before the cross, red blood continued to flow from her hands, feet, and side. She asked God to take away this grace. 

 

그녀의 기도가 받아들여지면서 피가 흐르는 것이 멈추었지만 성흔의 흔적은 남아 있었다. 동시에 그녀는 예언의 은사를 받았다.

Her prayers were accepted and the bleeding stopped, but the stigmata remained. At the same time, she received the gift of prophecy. 

 

1358년 그녀는 주현절 축일에 델프트에서 선종하였다.

She died in Delft on the Feast of the Epiphany in 1358.
