성녀 마르치아나(Saint Marciana) 아프리카 북서부 대서양 연안 마우레타니아(Mauretania) 루수쿠르(Rusuccur)에서 태어났다.

Saint Marciana was born in Rusuccur, Mauretania, on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Africa.

 

그녀는 하느님과 함께 하기 위하여 용감하게 세속을 끊어버렸다. 그러나 디오클레티아누스 황제의 박해가 절정에 이른 시기였기 때문에 용감하게 신앙을 지키던 그녀 역시 이방인들의 신상에 대한 우상숭배를 강요받았다.

She courageously broke away from the world to be with God. However, because the persecution of Emperor Diocletian was at its peak, she, who bravely maintained her faith, was also forced to worship idols of foreign gods. 

 

이를 거절하면서부터 그녀는 가혹한 폭력과 군인들이 순결을 빼앗으려고 덤벼들었을 때는 기적적인 힘으로 동정을 지킬 수 있었다.

After refusing this, she was able to protect her virginity with miraculous strength when brutal violence and soldiers attacked to take her virginity. 

 

이 사실을 안 주민들이 그리스도교에 대한 관심을 보여 수많은 이들이 개종하였다고 전해온다.

It is said that the residents who learned of this showed interest in Christianity and many converted. 

 

결국 성녀 마르치아나(Saint Marciana)는 마우레타니아의 카이사레아(Caesarea) 원형경기장에서 황소에게 찔리고 표범에게 물려 순교하였다.

In the end, Saint Marciana was martyred by being stabbed by a bull and mauled by a leopard in the amphitheater of Caesarea in Mauretania.
