이탈리아 베네치아의 저명한 귀족 가문에서 태어난 성 라우렌시오 유스티니아노(Saint Lawrence Justinian)는 어린 나이에 아버지를 여의었다.

Born into a prominent noble family in Venice, Italy, Saint Lawrence Justinian lost his father at a young age. 

 

그러나 그의 신심 깊은 어머니는 자녀들이 훌륭한 교육을 받도록 노력했다. 그는 19세 때에 빛으로 둘러싸인 한 처녀로부터 영원한 지혜에 관한 환시를 보았다.

However, his devout mother tried to ensure that her children received a good education. At the age of 19, he had a vision of eternal wisdom from a maiden surrounded by light. 

 

그녀는 그에게 기본적인 욕망에 만족하기보다 자신과 함께 참된 행복을 찾아가자고 초대하였다. 그래서 그는 수도 생활을 하고 있는 그의 삼촌에게 자문을 구했다.

She invited him to find true happiness with her rather than satisfying his basic desires. So he sought advice from his uncle, who was living a monastic life.  

 

삼촌은 그에게 수도 생활을 시작하기에 앞서 먼저 집에서부터 명예와 부 그리고 세속적 즐거움을 멀리하고 수도자다운 금욕생활을 실천할 것을 권고하였다.

Before beginning his monastic life, his uncle advised him to stay away from fame, wealth, and worldly pleasures at home and practice an ascetic life worthy of a monk. 

 

그러자 그의 건강을 염려한 어머니는 결혼 계획을 통해 그의 관심을 다른 곳으로 돌려보려고도 했다. 그러나 그는 삼촌의 충고를 감추고 어머니의 소망을 거부하고는 삼촌과 함께 수도 생활을 시작하였다.

Then, his mother, concerned about his health, tried to divert his attention by planning a wedding. However, he hid his uncle's advice, rejected his mother's wishes, and began a monastic life with his uncle.  

 

그는 매우 엄격한 금욕생활을 실천하고 자주 어깨에 자루를 메고 다니며 자기 공동체를 위하여 음식을 구걸하러 다녔다고 한다. 

It is said that he practiced a very strict ascetic life and often carried a sack on his shoulder to beg for food for his community. 

 

1407년 사제품을 받은 후 그는 공동체를 위해 성 아우구스티누스(Augustinus)의 수도 규칙을 받아들였다. 그는 기도 생활과 참회의 생활을 통해 내적으로 충만한 삶을 살았다.

After being ordained a priest in 1407, he accepted the monastic rule of St. Augustine for his community. He lived an inner, fulfilling life through a life of prayer and penance. 

 

또한 미사 집전을 통해 모든 이들의 영혼을 돕고, 그들이 거듭나는 신앙생활을 할 수 있도록 자각시켜 주었다. 그는 공적인 일에서는 매우 정열적인 성직자였으나, 개인적인 생활은 매우 엄격하고 겸손했다고 한다.

In addition, through the celebration of Mass, he helped everyone's souls and made them aware so that they could live a life of faith and be born again. He was a very passionate priest in public affairs, but his private life was said to be very strict and humble.  

 

성직자들의 모범으로 인정받고 있는 그는 1456년 1월 8일 베네치아에서 세상을 떠났다.

Recognized as a model for the clergy, he died in Venice on January 8, 1456.
