성녀 마르가리타 부르주아(Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys)는 프랑스에서 신심 깊은 가정에서 태어나 교육을 받으며 성장하였다.
Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys was born in France to a devout family and grew up receiving education.
그녀가 20세 떄에 부르심에 응답하기 위해 여러 수도회에 입회를 청하였으나 모두 거절당하였다.
When she was 20 years old, she tried to answer her calling by asking to join several religious orders, but she was all rejected.
1652년에 그녀는 캐나다의 몬트리올에 정착 중인 프랑스 총독이 자신의 식민지 내의 학교 선생을 원하자 그녀는 이를 동의하였다.
In 1652, she agreed to the request of the French governor of Montreal, Canada, to teach for schools in his colony.
이 학교는 점차 발전하였지만 인디언과의 전쟁으로 인하여 그녀는 잠시 귀국하였다.
The school gradually developed, but due to the war with the Indians, she had to return home for a while.
프랑스에서 자신과 함께 할 젊은 여성들을 모집하여 캐나다로 돌아온 그녀는 가장 버림받고 가난한 지역으로 들어갔다.
Recruiting young women from France to join her, she returned to Canada and entered some of the most abandoned and impoverished areas.
676년 마침내 퀘벡의 주교로부터 노틀담 수도회(Congregation of Notre Dame)의 법적 설립을 승인받았다. 그러나 그녀의 사도직 활동이 수월하지만은 않았다.
In 676, the bishop of Quebec finally approved the legal establishment of the Congregation of Notre Dame. However, her apostolic work was not easy.
수녀원에 화재가 발생해 자신의 조카를 포함하여 두 명의 수녀를 잃는 비극이 있었고 또 담당 주교와의 심각한 견해 차이도 있었다. 그런 와중에서도 노틀담 수도회(Congregation of Notre Dame)는 엄청난 발전을 거듭하였다.
There was a tragedy in which a fire broke out in a convent, resulting in the loss of two nuns, including her niece, and there were also serious differences of opinion with the bishop in charge. Meanwhile, the Congregation of Notre Dame continued to develop tremendously.
73세가 된 그녀는 건강과 기력이 점차 쇠하자 수도원에서 여생을 지내다가 1700년 1월 12일에 선종하였다.
At the age of 73, as her health and strength gradually declined, she spent the rest of her life in a monastery and died on January 12, 1700.
