성 베네딕토 비스코프(Saint Benedict Biscop)는 영국의 귀족 출신으로 알려져 있다. 그는 그는 25세 되던 해에 궁중을 떠났다. 

Saint Benedict Biscop is known to have come from an English noble family. He left the palace when he was 25 years old. 

 

그는 653년에 로마(Roma)로 순례의 길을 떠났다가 돌아오는 길에 성경 연구와 영적인 일에 헌신하려는 결심을 굳히게 되었다. 

He went on a pilgrimage to Rome in 653, and on his return he became determined to devote himself to Bible study and spiritual work. 

 

두 번째 로마 순례에서 돌아오던 어느 날 그는 프랑스의 레랭(Lerins) 수도원에서 수도자가 되었으며 2년을 그곳에서 지냈다. 

On his return from his second pilgrimage to Rome, he became a monk at the monastery of Lerins in France and remained there for two years. 

 

세 번째로 로마를 순례했을 때 교황 성 비탈리아누스(Saint Vitalianus)가 마침 캔터베리(Canterbury)의 신임 대주교로 선임된 성 테오도루스(Saint Theodorus)를 수행토록 명하였다. 

During his third pilgrimage to Rome, Pope Saint Vitalianus ordered him to accompany Saint Theodorus, who had just been appointed as the new Archbishop of Canterbury. 

 

성 테오도루스(Saint Theodorus)는 그를 캔터베리의 성 베드로(Saint Petrus)와 성 바오로(Saint Paulus) 수도원의 원장으로 임명하였고 2년 후에 그는 성인들의 유해, 종교 예술품, 회화, 원고 등을 수집하기 위하여 로마로 귀향하였다. 

Saint Theodorus appointed him abbot of the monastery of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Canterbury, and two years later he went to Rome to collect the relics of saints, religious art, paintings, and manuscripts.  

 

그는 또 수도자들에게 성무일도를 노래하고 그레고리안 성가를 익히도록 음악 전문가를 초빙하였다. 그는 생애의 마지막 3년을 중풍으로 침대 위에서 지내다가 1월 12일에 선종하였다.

He also invited a music expert to teach the monks to sing the Liturgy of the Hours and familiarize them with Gregorian chant. He spent the last three years of his life in bed suffering from paralysis and died on January 12th.
