중세의 세르비아 왕국인 네만야(Nemanya) 왕조를 세운 스테파누스 1세(Stephanus I)의 셋째 아들인 성 사바(Saint Sava)는 17세 때에 그리스의 아토스 산(Mount Athos)에서 수도생활을 시작하였다.
Saint Sava, the third son of Stephanus I, who founded the Nemanya dynasty in the medieval Serbian kingdom, began his monastic life at Mount Athos in Greece at the age of 17.
그는 부친의 도움으로 세르비아 수도자들을 위하여 아토스 산(Mount Athos)에 수도원을 따로 세운 후 수도원장으로 봉사하였다.
With the help of his father, he established a separate monastery on Mount Athos for Serbian monks and served as its abbot.
수많은 수도자들과 함께 그는 스투데니카(Studenica)에 수도원을 세운 것을 비롯하여 온 나라의 개혁, 특히 교육을 위하여 헌신하여 땅에 떨어졌던 신앙과 교육이 부흥되기 시작하였다.
Together with numerous monks, he founded a monastery in Studenica and dedicated himself to reforming the entire country, especially education, and faith and education, which had fallen to the ground, began to be revived.
그의 노력은 국민들의 단결을 불러 일으켰고 교회 또한 크게 융성하게 하였다. 그는 사제와 주교를 존중하여 그들에게 교회를 맡김으로써 더욱 발전시켰다.
His efforts brought about unity among the people and greatly prospered the church. He further developed the church by respecting priests and bishops and leaving them in charge of the church.
그는 두 차례나 성지를 순례했는데, 두 번째 순례 중 불가리아(Bulgaria)의 티르노보(Tirnovo)에서 사망하였다.
He made two pilgrimages to the Holy Land, and died in Tirnovo, Bulgaria, during the second pilgrimage.
