성 빈첸시오 팔로티(Saint Vincent Pallotti)는 1795년 4월 21일 로마(Roma)에서 식료품 장사를 하던 부유한 부모에게서 태어났다.

Saint Vincent Pallotti was born on April 21, 1795 in Rome to wealthy parents who owned groceries.  

 

그의 스승이었던 돈 페리(Don Ferri)는 그를 “작은 성인이지만 머리는 조금 둔했다”고 평가하였다. 그러나 성장하면서 학업 성취 능력은 향상되었고 1818년 5월 16일에 사제품을 받았다.

His teacher, Don Ferri, described him as “a small saint, but a little dull in his intellect.” However, as he grew up, his academic ability improved and he was ordained a priest on May 16, 1818. 

 

그리고 같은 해 7월 25일 신학박사 학위를 받은 후에 그는 10년 동안 로마의 사피엔차(Sapienza) 대학에서 신학을 가르친 뒤 영성 지도와 강론에만 전념하였다.

After receiving his doctorate in theology on July 25 of the same year, he taught theology at Sapienza University in Rome for 10 years and then devoted himself exclusively to spiritual guidance and preaching.  

 

1835년 그는 변화와 정의에 헌신하고자 하는 성직자, 수도자와 평신도들을 모아 가난한 소년들을 위한 야간학교와 직업학교를 세우고 선진 농업기술의 전수를 위한 학원을 세웠다.

In 1835, he gathered priests, monks, and laypeople who were committed to change and justice and established a night school and vocational school for poor boys and an academy to teach advanced agricultural techniques. 

 

학교에서는 젊은이들에게 제화, 제단 기술과 농업 같은 시장성이 있는 기술을 가르쳤고 그들의 작업에 자부심을 주입시켰다. 

Schools taught young people marketable skills such as shoemaking, altar making and farming and instilled pride in their work. 

 

그는 수도생활의 기도와 침묵에서만 성스러움을 찾을 수 있는 것이 아니라 삶에 있어서 필요한 부분을 찾아 채워주는 데에서도 찾을 수 있다는 전제 하에서 일했다.

He worked under the premise that holiness can be found not only in the prayers and silence of monastic life, but also in finding and satisfying needs in life. 

 

1835년 그는 팔라티노회(Pallottines)를 설립했는데, 그의 일생 동안 12명의 회원만 있었지만 그 후로 크게 성장하였다.

In 1835 he founded the Pallottines, which had only 12 members during his lifetime but grew significantly thereafter. 

 

그들은 이탈리아, 브라질, 오스트레일리아, 미국 등지에 퍼져 창립자와 같은 이민자들을 돌보았으며, 동방 정교회 그리스도교인들과의 종교 간 대화를 촉진시키는 데 전문적으로 활동하였다. 

They spread throughout Italy, Brazil, Australia, and the United States, caring for immigrants like the founder, and specialized in promoting interreligious dialogue with Eastern Orthodox Christians. 

 

그는 젊은 교수에게 다음과 같이 썼다.

He wrote to the young professor: 

 

“당신은 트라피스트 회원과 은수자들의 엄격함과 침묵에서 잘라져 나온 부분이 아닙니다. 세상에서 거룩해 지십시오. 사회관계에서, 당신의 일터에서, 여가 생활 중에, 당신의 가르치는 직무에서, 출판사와의 만남과 죄인들과의 만남에서 거룩해 지십시오. 성스러움이란 단지 하느님의 일을 하는 것, 언제 어디에나 있는 하느님의 뜻을 실천하는 것입니다.”

You are not a cut out part of the severity and silence of the Trappists and hermits. Be holy in the world. Be holy in your social relationships, in your workplace, in your leisure time, in your teaching, in your meetings with publishers and with sinners. Holiness simply means doing God's work, carrying out God's will everywhere and at all times. 

 

그의 사도적 활동은 자신의 엄격함에서 비롯된 것이었다. 그는 1837년 콜레라가 창궐했을 때에도 위험을 무릅쓰고 환자들을 돌보았다.

His apostolic activity was motivated by his own severity. Even during the cholera outbreak in 1837, he took risks to care for patients. 

 

그는 사람들의 영적 목마름을 채워주기 위해 극도의 노력을 했으며 자신에게 다가오는 사제는 누구나 쏴버리겠다고 위협하는 환자에게 다가가기 위해 노파로 변장하기도 했다.

He went to extreme lengths to satisfy people's spiritual thirst, even disguising himself as an old woman to approach a patient who threatened to shoot any priest who approached him. 

 

그는 죄인들의 회개를 위해 많은 노력을 하다가 1850년 1월 22일 55세의 나이로 로마에서 선종하였다.

He died in Rome on January 22, 1850 at the age of 55 after making great efforts to bring sinners to repentance.
