성 하나니아스(Saint Ananias)는 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul the Apostle)의 회심에 깊이 관여된 인물이다.

Saint Ananias was deeply involved in the conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle. 

 

하나니아스(Ananias)의 이름의 뜻은 ‘주님은 은혜롭다’라는 뜻이다.

The meaning of the name Ananias is ‘The Lord is gracious.’ 

 

어느 날 다마스쿠스로 교인들을 잡으러 가던 바오로(Paul)는 도중에 강렬한 빛을 만나 바닥에 엎어진다. 그러자 예수님의 음성이 들렸다.

One day, Paul, who was on his way to Damascus to arrest believers, was struck by a strong light and fell to the ground. Then I heard the voice of Jesus. 

 

“사울아 왜 나를 박해하느냐”

“Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 

 

이렇게 해서 바오로(Paul)는 살아 계신 예수님을 만나고 삶의 방향을 바꾸기 시작했다. 하지만 그는 자신이 무얼 해야 할지 아무것도 모르는 상황에 있었다.

In this way, Paul met the living Jesus and began to change the direction of his life. But he was in a situation where he had no idea what to do. 

 

이후 바오로(Paul)를 초대교회 안으로 이끌어준 사람이 하나니아스(Ananias)였다. 하나니아스(Ananias)가 안수하자 바오로(Paul)는 삶의 방향을 확신하게 되었다.

Afterwards, it was Ananias who led Paul into the early church. After Ananias laid hands on him, Paul became certain of the direction of his life. 

 

이렇듯 하나니아스(Ananias)는 바오로(Paul)의 영적 스승이었다. 하지만 잘 알려져 있지 않다.

In this way, Ananias was Paul's spiritual teacher. But it is not well known. 

 

사도행전에 의하면 어느 날 그에게 주님께서 나타났다. “일어나 유다의 집에 있는 사울이라는 사람을 찾아라.”

According to the Book of Acts, one day the Lord appeared to him. “Get up and find a man named Saul at the house of Judah.” 

 

그러자 하나니아스(Ananias)가 답했다. “주님 그가 교인들에게 얼마나 못된 짓을 했는지 많은 이들에게서 들었습니다.”

Then Ananias answered. “Lord, I heard from many people how bad he was to the church members.” 

 

그러자 주님께서는 그에게 다음과 같이 말했다. “가거라. 그는 내가 선택한 그릇이다.”

Then the Lord said to him: “Go. “He is my chosen vessel.” 

 

이렇듯 하나니아스(Ananias)는 주님의 명령에 자신의 편견을 접었다. 그리하여 아무런 의심 없이 바오로(Paul)와 지내며 복음의 핵심을 가르쳤다.

In this way, Ananias gave up his prejudices in response to the Lord's command. So, without any doubt, he stayed with Paul and taught him the core of the gospel.  

 

그리고 다마스쿠스에서 바오로(Paul)가 신앙의 뿌리를 내리도록 후견인이 되어주었다. 이후 그는 초대교회 무대에서 사라진다.

And in Damascus, Paul became his guardian so that his faith could take root. Afterwards, he disappears from the stage of the early church.
