시토의 성 알베리코(Saint Alberic of Cîteaux)는 12세기 중반 프랑스에서 태어났으나 그의 출생이나 은수자의 삶 이전에 대해서는 거의 알려진 바가 없다.

Saint Alberic of Cîteaux was born in France in the mid-12th century, but little is known about his birth or his life prior to his life as a hermit. 

 

그는 숲에서 몇몇 동료들과 함께 은수자로 살고 있었다. 그와 동료 은수자들은 성 로베르투스(Saint Robertus)에게 함께 은수 생활을 하자고 요청했고 그가 수락하면서 그들의 지도자가 되었다.

He was living as a hermit with some companions in the forest. He and his fellow hermits asked Saint Robertus to join them in their hermitage, and he accepted and became their leader. 

 

성 로베르투스(Saint Robertus)가 수도원장을 맡으면서 그의 명성으로 많은 지원자가 몰리면서 수도원은 빠르게 성장했다.

When Saint Robertus took over as abbot, his fame attracted many applicants and the monastery grew rapidly. 

 

동시에 많은 기부금으로 수도원이 부유해지면서 새로 들어온 수도사들이 엄격한 규칙을 따르지 못하고 수도사의 본분에서 벗어나 점점 나태한 생활에 빠지는 문제가 생겼다.

At the same time, as the monastery became wealthy through large donations, a problem arose as new monks were unable to follow the strict rules and deviated from their duties as monks, leading to an increasingly idle life. 

 

이 사건으로 인해서 성 로베르투스(Saint Robertus)와 성 알베리코(Saint Alberic)는 보다 철저한 은수 생활을 위해 수도원을 떠났다.

Because of this incident, Saint Robertus and Saint Alberic left the monastery to pursue a more rigorous life as a hermit. 

 

그들은 시토(Cteaux) 계곡에 새로운 수도원을 설립했다. 그러나 그들이 떠난 수도원에서 어려움에 처하자 교황에게 중재를 요청했다.

They founded a new monastery in the Cteaux Valley. However, when they encountered difficulties in the monastery they left, they asked the Pope for intervention. 

 

교황의 명령으로 성 로베르투스(Saint Robertus)는 몰렘(Molesme) 수도원으로 되돌아가 수도사들은 지도하다가 선종했다.

By order of the Pope, Saint Robertus returned to the Monastery of Molesme and led the monks before his death. 

 

그가 죽은 이후 성 알베리코(Saint Alberic)가 시토회(Cistercian Order)의 제2대 수도원장이 되었다.

After his death, Saint Alberic became the second abbot of the Cistercian Order. 

 

그는 하느님을 섬기는 데 있어서 극도의 청빈과 힘든 노동의 모범을 몸소 보여주었다. 1109년 1월 26일 그가 세상을 떠났을 때 후임자는 이런 말을 했다. 

He personally set an example of extreme poverty and hard work in serving God. When he passed away on January 26, 1109, his successor said this. 

 

“여러분은 공경하는 사부님과 영적 지도자를 잃었지만, 나는 사부님과 영적 지도자뿐만 아니라 친구이자 주님의 동료 군사를 잃었습니다.”

“You have lost your venerable master and spiritual leader, but I have lost not only my master and spiritual leader, but also a friend and fellow soldier of the Lord.”
