성 티모테오(Saint Timothy)는 소아시아 지방 리카오니아(Lycaonia)의 리스트라(Lystra)에서 그리스도교 부모님에게서 태어났다.

Saint Timothy was born to Christian parents in Lystra, Lycaonia, Asia Minor. 

 

‘티모테오’의 뜻은 ‘하느님을 공경하는 또는 하느님을 영광스럽게 한다’는 의미를 지니고 있다.

The meaning of ‘Timotheo’ is ‘honoring God or glorifying God.’ 

 

그는 진실한 믿음을 지닌 젊은이로 성장했는데 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)는 그와 동행하기를 원했다.

He grew up to be a young man with sincere faith, and the Apostle Saint Paul wanted to accompany him. 

 

사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)는 그 고장 유다인들 안에서 말썽이 일어날까 봐 성 티모테오(Saint Timothy)에게 할례를 베풀고 함께 여러 고을을 두루 다니며 복음을 전하였다.

Apostle Saint Paul, fearing trouble would arise among the local Jews, circumcised Saint Timothy and traveled with them to various towns preaching the gospel. 

 

성 티모테오(Saint Timothy)는 ‘내가 주님 안에서 사랑하는 나의 성실한 아들’이라 불릴 만큼 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)의 제자를 넘어 그의 절친한 친구이자 협력자 그리고 아들 같은 존재였다.

Saint Timothy was not only a disciple of the Apostle Saint Paul, but was also his close friend, collaborator, and son-like figure, to the extent that he was called ‘my faithful son whom I love in the Lord.’ 

 

그리고 그는 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)가 에페소를 떠나 예루살렘으로 가는 그의 마지막 여정에도 동행하였다.

And he accompanied the Apostle Saint Paul on his last journey from Ephesus to Jerusalem. 

 

신약성경 안에서 성 티모테오(Saint Timothy)의 이후 행적에 대한 언급을 찾을 수는 없으나 교회 전승을 통해 다소나마 알 수 있다.

Although we cannot find any mention of Saint Timothy's later actions in the New Testament, we can learn something about them through church tradition. 

 

성 티모테오(Saint Timothy)가 에페수스의 초대 주교였으며 성모 마리아의 죽음을 목격했다고 기록이 있으며 마르쿠스 네르바(Marcus Nerva) 황제 치하인 97년에 순교했다고 전해진다.

Saint Timothy was the first bishop of Ephesus and is recorded as having witnessed the death of the Virgin Mary, and is said to have been martyred in 97 AD during the reign of Emperor Marcus Nerva. 

 

또한 그는 디아나(Diana) 여신을 공경하는 에페수스의 이교 축제 중에 디아나 여신이 우상에 불과함을 지적하다가 광분한 군중들에게 끌려가 매를 맞고 잔인하게 돌에 맞아 순교했다고 한다.

It is also said that during a pagan festival in Ephesus honoring the goddess Diana, he pointed out that the goddess Diana was nothing more than an idol, and was dragged away by a frenzied crowd, beaten, and brutally stoned to death.
