[천주교 세례명] 코르시카와 선원의 수호성인 성녀 데보타(Saint Devota)

전승에 따르면 성녀 데보타(Saint Devota)는 코르시카에서 태어났다. 그녀는 젊었을 때 하느님을 섬기는 일에 자신을 온전히 바치기로 결심했다.

According to tradition, Saint Devota was born in Corsica. When she was young, she decided to devote herself completely to the service of God. 

 

디오클레티아누스 황제의 그리스도교 박해 때 신자였던 그녀는 투옥되고 고문을 받았다. 그녀의 입은 부서졌으며 그녀의 몸은 바위와 가시덤불 사이에서 고통을 받았다. 결국 신앙을 끝까지 지켰던 그녀는 돌에 맞고 순교했다고 전해진다. 

As a believer, she was imprisoned and tortured during Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. Her mouth was broken and her body was tormented among the rocks and thorns. It is said that in the end, she maintained her faith until the end and was stoned to death as a martyr. 

 

그녀가 죽은 후 총독은 그녀의 숭배를 막기 위해 그녀의 시신을 불태우라고 명령했다. 그러나 그녀의 시신은 그리스도교인들에 의해 불길로부터 구해졌다. 

After her death, the governor ordered her body to be burned to prevent her worship. However, her body was saved from the fire by Christians. 

 

그녀의 시신은 아프리카로 향하는 배에 안치되었다. 그러나 폭풍이 배를 덮쳤으나 비둘기 한 마리가 나타나 모나코로 배로 인도했다. 그녀의 시신은 그곳에 묻혔다.

Her body was placed on a ship bound for Africa. However, a storm struck the ship, but a dove appeared and guided the ship to Monaco. Her body was buried there. 

 

그녀를 기리기 위해 예배당이 세워졌으며 지금까지도 모나코에 남아 있다. 

A chapel was built in her honor and still remains in Monaco.
