성녀 안젤라 메리치(Saint Angela Merici)는 이탈리아에서 태어나 경건한 신앙인으로 교육받았다. 그녀는 어려서부터 성인들의 일생과 금욕 생활에 감명을 받아 금욕을 하였다고 전해진다.

Saint Angela Merici was born in Italy and educated as a devout believer. It is said that she became celibate from a young age because she was impressed by the lives of saints and their ascetic lives. 

 

13세 때 첫영성체를 한 후 평생 동안 동정을 지킬 것을 결심했다. 하지만 부모님과 부모님을 연달아 여의고 외삼촌의 보살핌을 받으며 성장하였다.

After receiving her first Holy Communion at the age of 13, she decided to remain a virgin for the rest of her life. However, he lost his parents one after another and grew up under the care of his maternal uncle.  

 

그 후 그녀는 작은 형제회 재속회(the Third Order of St. Francis)에 입회하여 기도와 가난, 극기의 생활을 철저히 실천하며 자신을 이웃을 위한 속죄의 제물로 하느님께 봉헌하였다.

Afterwards, she joined the Third Order of St. Francis, practiced a life of prayer, poverty, and self-denial, and offered herself to God as an offering of atonement for her neighbors. 

 

부모처럼 돌보아주던 외삼촌의 사망 후 그녀는 이웃에게 봉사하며 살았는데 특히 주위의 가난한 아이들을 모아 기도와 신앙생활을 지도하였다.

After the death of her maternal uncle, whom she had cared for like a parent, she lived a life of service to her neighbors, especially gathering poor children around her and guiding them in prayer and religious life.  

 

1524년 온갖 어려움에도 불구하고 예루살렘 성지를 순례하고, 다음 해 로마를 순례한 뒤 그녀는 교황 클레멘스 7세(Clemens VII)에게 동정녀들의 모임을 시작하고자 하는 뜻이 있음을 밝히고 허가를 받았다.

Despite all the difficulties, she made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Jerusalem in 1524, and after a pilgrimage to Rome the following year, she announced to Pope Clemens VII her intention to start a gathering of virgins and received permission. 

 

1535년 11월 25일 28명의 동정녀들은 브레시아의 성 아프라(Saint Afra) 성당에서 영성체를 하고 그녀가 만든 규칙에 따라 청빈, 정결, 순명을 지키는 회원이 될 것을 서명했다. 이렇게 '우르술라회(Order of Saint Ursula)'가 공식적으로 설립되었다. 

On November 25, 1535, 28 virgins received Holy Communion at the church of Saint Afra in Brescia and signed their pledge to become members of poverty, chastity, and obedience according to the rules she established. In this way, the Order of Saint Ursula was officially established.  

 

그들은 특히 소녀들의 교육에 투신하고자 하였다. 성녀 안젤라(Saint Angela)는 1540년 1월 27일 선종했다.

They were especially willing to devote themselves to the education of girls. Saint Angela died on January 27, 1540.
