성 티토(Saint Titus)는 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)의 비서로 그에 의하여 그리스도인이 되었을 뿐만 아니라 그의 가장 사랑받는 제자였다. 

Saint Titus was the secretary of the Apostle Saint Paul, and not only did he become a Christian by him, but he was also his most beloved disciple. 

 

성 티토(Saint Titus)는 사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)의 많은 선교여행에 동행하는데 예루살렘 공의회에도 두 사람은 함께하였다.

Saint Titus accompanied the Apostle Saint Paul on many of his missionary trips, and the two were also present at the Council of Jerusalem. 

 

사도 성 바오로(Saint Paul)는 그를 코린토스(Corinthos)로 파견하여 오류를 시정케 하면서 예루살렘의 가난한 신자들을 위한 헌금을 모금하게 하였다.

The Apostle Saint Paul dispatched him to Corinthos to correct errors and collect donations for the poor believers in Jerusalem. 

 

"이보게 티토(Titus), 코린토스(Corinthos) 대부분의 교인들은 믿음이나 언변, 그리고 지식이나 열성이 따를 수 없는 훌륭한 신자들이요. 그들을 잘 사목 해 주시오. 분열된 교회를 하나로 만들어 주고 은혜로운 헌금 모금사업도 차질 없이 추진해 주시오."

“Look, Titus, most of the Corinthos church members are excellent believers whose faith, eloquence, knowledge, and zeal cannot be matched. Please minister to them well. Please unite the divided churches and carry out the gracious offering collection project without a hitch.” 

 

"알았습니다. 분부대로 열심히 하겠습니다."

“I understand. I will do my best as instructed.” 

 

헌금 모금사업이 성공하자 성 바오로(Saint Paul)는 그에 대한 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다. 

When the donation collection project was successful, Saint Paul heaped praise on it. 

 

"티토(Titus)는 나의 참 아들이요, 친구이며, 믿음의 동반자입니다. 티토(Titus)는 여러분이 두렵고 떨리는 마음으로 맞아준 것에 대해 신자 여러분에게도 큰 애정을 품고 있습니다." 

“Titus is my true son, friend, and companion in faith. Titus also has great affection for you, the faithful, because you have welcomed him with fear and trembling.” 

 

그 후 그는 사도 바오로(Saint Paul)에 의하여 크레타(Creta)의 주교로 축성되어 바오로(Paul)의 사업을 이어나갔다. 

Afterwards, he was consecrated as bishop of Crete by Saint Paul and continued Paul's work. 

 

"티토(Titus)! 내가 그대를 크레타(Creta) 섬에 홀로 남겨둔 것은 내가 다하지 못한 사업을 완결 지으려는 것이오. 훌륭한 원로들을 뽑아주어 교회가 자립할 수 있게 해주오. 그리고 크레타(Creta) 사람들 중에 악명 높은 자들이 많소. 그들은 더러운 이익을 위해 못된 것을 가르치는 자들이오. 그대는 그들을 꾸짖어주고 건전한 교리에 부합하는 것만을 가르치시오." 

“Titus! The reason I left you alone on the island of Crete is to complete the work I could not complete. Select excellent elders so that the church can become self-reliant. And among the people of Crete, "There are many who are infamous. They teach evil things for dirty gain. Rebuke them and teach only what is in accordance with sound doctrine." 

 

그 후 그는 달마티아(Dalmatia)를 방문한 뒤 크레타(Creta)로 돌아와서 선종한 듯하다.

Afterwards, he seems to have visited Dalmatia and returned to Crete, where he died.
