성녀 바울라(Saint Paula)는 347년 5월 5일 이탈리아 로마(Roma)에서 부유한 귀족 가문이자 그리스도교 신자 가정의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Paula was born on May 5, 347 in Rome, Italy, as the daughter of a wealthy noble family and Christian family. 

 

15살 때 그녀는 결혼하여 다섯 명의 자녀를 두었다. 그들은 이상적인 부부로 존경받았다.

At age 15 she married and had five children. They were revered as an ideal couple. 

 

하지만 그녀가 32세가 된 379년에 남편이 사망하였다. 그 뒤로 그녀는 평소 가까이 지내던 성녀 마르첼라(Saint Marcella)의 집으로 들어가 엄격한 절제 생활을 실천하며 가난한 이들에게 자선을 베푸는 삶에 헌신하였다.

However, her husband died in 379, when she was 32 years old. After that, she moved into the home of Saint Marcella, whom she was close to, and devoted herself to a life of strict abstinence and giving charity to the poor.  

 

그녀는 382년에 로마에 온 성 히에로니무스(Saint Hieronymus)를 만났다. 그 만남이 인연이 되어 그녀는 그를 영적 지도자로 모시고 그의 사업을 적극 후원하게 되었다.

She met Saint Hieronymus when he came to Rome in 382. That meeting led to her becoming a spiritual leader and actively supporting his work. 

 

384년경 큰딸인 블레실라(Blaesilla)가 세상을 떠나자 그녀는 큰 슬픔에 잠겼으나 이를 극복하고 로마를 떠나 영적 스승이 있는 곳으로 향했다.

When her eldest daughter Blaesilla passed away around 384, she was deeply saddened, but overcame it and left Rome to go to her spiritual teacher. 

 

그녀는 자신의 재산으로 성 히에로니무스(Saint Hieronymus)를 도와 베들레헴에 세 개의 남자 수도원과 한 개의 여자 수도원을 세우는 데 경제적 뒷받침을 제공했다. 또한 순례자들을 위한 숙소도 지었다.

With her wealth, she helped Saint Hieronymus establish three male monasteries and one female monastery in Bethlehem, providing financial support. They also built lodgings for pilgrims. 

 

그녀는 여자 수도회의 지도자이자 성 히에로니무스(Saint Hieronymus)의 절친한 친구요 협조자로서 여생을 기도와 고행 그리고 애덕 실천에 전념했다.

As the leader of a women's religious order and a close friend and collaborator of Saint Hieronymus, she devoted the rest of her life to prayer, asceticism, and the practice of charity. 

 

그리고 성 히에로니무스(Saint Hieronymus)의 성경 연구와 번역 작업을 도우며 스스로도 성경 공부에 힘썼다.

He also helped Saint Hieronymus with his research and translation of the Bible and devoted himself to studying the Bible. 

 

그녀는 402년경 병에 걸려 고생하다가 404년 1월 26일 56세의 나이로 선종하였다.

She suffered from illness around 402 and died at the age of 56 on January 26, 404.
