성 헨리코 데 오소 이 세르세요(Saint Enrique de Ossó i Cervelló)는 1840년 10월 16일 스페인에서 태어났다. 

Saint Enrique de Ossó i Cervelló was born in Spain on October 16, 1840. 

 

막내로 태어난 그는 어려서부터 사제가 되고 싶다는 마음을 느꼈다. 그의 어머니는 아들의 마음을 아시고 적극 지지했지만 아버지는 반대했다.

Born as the youngest child, he knew from an early age that he wanted to become a priest. His mother knew her son's feelings and actively supported him, but his father was against it. 

 

그래서 그의 아버지는 성 헨리쿠스가 12살이 되었을 때 직물 관련 일을 배우도록 그를 숙부에게 보냈다. 그러나 그는 집을 떠난 지 얼마 되지 않아 중병을 앓아 집으로 돌아왔다.

So when Saint Henricus was 12 years old, his father sent him to his uncle to learn the weaving trade. However, not long after leaving home, he became seriously ill and returned home. 

 

1854년 그의 어머니가 당시 유행하던 콜레라에 걸려 사망하고나서도 아버지는 사제가 되는 것을 반대하자 그는 수도원으로 피신하였다.

Even after his mother died from cholera, which was prevalent at the time in 1854, his father opposed him becoming a priest, so he took refuge in a monastery. 

 

그제야 비로소 그의 아버지도 그가 진심으로 원한다는 것을 깨달았다. 그는 1867년 9월 21일 사제품을 받고 몬세라트(Montserrat)의 수도원에서 첫 미사를 봉헌하였다.

Only then did his father realize that he really wanted it too. He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1867 and celebrated his first mass at a monastery in Montserrat. 

 

그는 아빌라(Avila)의 성녀 테레사(Saint Teresia)의 개혁적 열정에 매료되었다. 그녀의 정신을 따르는 ‘성녀 테레사 선교회(the Teresian Missionaries)’를 설립하였다.

He was fascinated by the reformative zeal of Saint Teresa of Avila. The Teresian Missionaries, which followed her spirit, were established. 

 

그는 19세기 후반 언론매체가 갖는 시대적 중요성을 깨닫고 주간지 “인간(The Man)”과 “민중들의 친구(The Friend of People)”를 창간하여 그곳에 많은 글을 기고하였다. 

He realized the importance of the media in the late 19th century and founded the weekly magazines “The Man” and “The Friend of People” and contributed many articles to them. 

 

1896년 1월 27일 그는 선종하였다.

He died on January 27, 1896.
