성 요셉 프라이나데메츠(Joseph Freinademetz)는 1852년 4월 15일 오스트리아와 인접한 이탈리아 북부 알프스산맥의 작은 마을에서 태어났다. 

Saint Joseph Freinademetz was born on April 15, 1852 in a small village in the Alps in northern Italy, adjacent to Austria. 

 

그는 태어난 날 세례성사를 받고 가족으로부터 단순하지만 독실한 신앙을 물려받았다. 그는 신학을 공부하는 동안 해외 선교사로서 일생을 살아갈 것을 고심하기 시작했다. 

He received the sacrament of baptism on the day he was born and inherited a simple but devout faith from his family. While studying theology, he began to consider living his life as an overseas missionary. 

 

그래서 그는 서품받은 지 2년째 되던 해에 성 아놀드 얀센(Saint Arnold Jansen) 신부를 만나 도움을 받을 수 있었다. 

So, in the second year of his ordination, he was able to meet Father Saint Arnold Jansen and receive help. 

 

1879년 3월 2일 그는 선교사 십자가를 받고 중국을 향해 출발했다. 그는 홍콩에 도착했고 산둥성 남부의 새로운 선교지로 선교 여정을 떠났다. 

On March 2, 1879, he received the Missionary Cross and departed for China. He arrived in Hong Kong and set off on a missionary journey to a new mission field in southern Shandong Province. 

 

이는 오랜 시간이 걸리는 힘겨운 여정으로 강도들의 습격을 받으면서도 첫 그리스도교 공동체를 형성해야 하는 어려운 사명이었다. 

This was a long and difficult journey, and it was a difficult mission to form the first Christian community while being attacked by robbers. 

 

하나의 공동체가 겨우 형성되었을 때 주교의 훈령이 도착해 그들은 모든 것을 뒤로하고 새로운 일을 시작하였다. 그는 교리교사를 양성하기 위해 온 힘을 쏟으며 중국인을 위한 교리교육 책자를 준비하였다. 

When a community had barely been formed, an order from the bishop arrived and they left everything behind and started anew. He devoted all his energy to training catechism teachers and prepared catechesis booklets for the Chinese. 

 

1898년 그는 후두염을 앓았고 고된 작업과 다른 많은 힘든 일의 결과로 결핵에 걸렸다. 그래서 그는 주교와 다른 사제들의 권유로 건강을 회복할 희망을 안고 휴식을 위해 일본으로 갔다. 

In 1898 he suffered from laryngitis and contracted tuberculosis as a result of his hard work and many other difficult tasks. So, at the urging of his bishop and other priests, he went to Japan for rest with the hope of recovering his health. 

 

그곳에서 얼마간 요양하며 건강을 회복한 후 다시 중국으로 돌아왔지만 완쾌된 것은 아니었다. 결국 그는 병세가 심해져 1908년 1월 28일 선종하였다. 

After recuperating there for a while and recovering his health, he returned to China, but was not fully recovered. Eventually, his illness worsened and he passed away on January 28, 1908.

“요셉 프라이나데메츠 성인은 산악 지역 사람 특유의 우직함으로 당신 자신을 선물로 내어놓음으로써 중국 산둥성의 그리스도인들에게 ‘사랑의 증거’를 보여주었습니다. 성인은 선교사들에게 ‘선교사가 사랑하지 않으며 사람들로부터 사랑받지 못한다면 그가 하는 선교 사업은 무용지물이 됩니다’라는 말을 하였는데, 성인 역시 자신도 이 말 그대로 사랑을 위해 그리고 사랑으로 중국인들의 모든 생활 여건과 상황을 받아들였습니다. 예수 그리스도를 닮은 요셉 프라이나데메츠 성인은 복음의 토착화에 관하여 뛰어난 모범입니다. 그리하여 성인은 철두철미하게 중국인들과 동고동락함으로써 수많은 중국인을 구원하였습니다.”
