성녀 아폴로니아(Saint Apollonia)는 이집트의 알렉산드리아에 살며 위험을 무릅쓰고 감옥에 갇힌 그리스도인들을 찾아 위로하고 복음을 전하던 연로한 여부제(Deaconess)였다. 

Saint Apollonia was an elderly Deaconess who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, and risked her life to visit imprisoned Christians, comfort them, and spread the gospel. 

 

알렉산드리아에서 그리스도교에 반대하는 폭동이 일어났는데 나이 많은 여부제(Deaconess)로 큰 존경을 받고 있던 그녀를 붙잡은 이교도 선동가들은 그녀의 얼굴을 때려 이를 모두 부러뜨렸다. 

Riots against Christianity broke out in Alexandria, and the pagan agitators who captured the elderly Deaconess, who was highly revered, struck her in the face and knocked out all her teeth. 

 

그리고 도시 성문 바깥에 화장용 장작 기둥을 세워 놓고는 자기네들을 따라 그리스도에 대한 신성 모독의 말이나 이교도의 신을 부르는 말을 하지 않으면 산 채로 불태우겠다고 위협하였다. 

They then set up a funeral pyre outside the city gates and threatened to burn them alive if they did not follow them and utter blasphemy words against Christ or invocations of pagan gods. 

 

그러자 그녀는 잠시 시간을 달라고 한 뒤 갑자기 불로 뛰어들어 타 죽었다. 그녀는 자신의 신앙과 순결을 지키기 위해 기꺼이 스스로 죽음을 선택한 것이었다.

Then she asked for a moment and then suddenly jumped into the fire and burned to death. She willingly chose to die to protect her faith and purity. 

 

전승에 따르면 박해자에게 체포되어 재판관 앞에 선 그녀는 “나는 하느님을 위해 봉사하는 그리스도인입니다.”라고 당당히 자신의 신분을 밝혔다고 전해진다.

According to tradition, when she was arrested by her persecutors and stood before the judge, she proudly announced her identity, saying, “I am a Christian serving God.”  

 

그녀는 고문을 당할 때 이가 뽑히는 고통을 당했기 때문에 치아 질환자나 치과의사의 수호성인으로 공경을 받고 있다.

She is revered as the patron saint of people with dental problems and dentists because she suffered the pain of having her teeth pulled out when she was tortured.
