루앙의 성 안스베르토(Saint Ansbert of Rouen)는 프랑스에서 귀족 가문의 아들로 태어나 우수한 교육을 받고 성장했다.

Saint Ansbert of Rouen was born in France as the son of a noble family and grew up receiving an excellent education. 

 

안스베르토(Ansbert)의 의미는 ‘찬란한 신’이란 뜻이다.

The meaning of Ansbert is ‘brilliant god.’ 

 

그는 클로타르 3세(Chlothar III)의 왕궁에서 고위직에 올랐다. 그의 아버지는 아들의 미래를 위해 성녀 안가드리스마(Saint Angadrisma)와의 결혼을 계획했다.

He rose to high office at the palace of Chlothar III. His father planned his son's future marriage to Saint Angadrisma. 

 

그러나 당사자들은 부모에게 순종해 결혼의 의무를 이행하기보다 수도 생활에 헌신하길 원하고 있었다.

However, the parties wanted to devote themselves to monastic life rather than obey their parents and fulfill their marital obligations. 

 

그녀는 결혼할 수 없게 해달라고 간절히 기도했고, 전승에 의하면 그 기도가 받아들여져 피부에 병이 생겨 결혼을 피할 수 있었다고 한다.

She prayed earnestly to prevent her from marrying, and according to tradition, her prayer was accepted and she was able to avoid marriage due to a skin disease. 

 

그녀는 그 뒤에 수녀원에 들어갔고, 수도복을 받으면서 피부에 생겼던 병도 즉시 나았다고 한다.

She later entered a convent, and it is said that when she received her monastic habit, her skin disease was immediately cured. 

 

그녀의 일로 크게 감동한 그도 수도 생활에 전념하려 했지만 왕의 권유로 한동안 왕궁에 더 머물러야 했다.

He was greatly moved by her work and tried to devote himself to monastic life, but at the king's urging, he had to stay in the royal palace for a while longer. 

 

왕이 사망하자 그는 궁정에서의 모든 직책을 포기하고 베네딕토회(Benedictines)에 들어가 수도승이 되었다. 그는 가난한 사람들을 위한 자선 사업을 활발히 전개했으며 또한 루앙의 주교가 되었다.

When the king died, he gave up all his positions at court, joined the Benedictine order, and became a monk. He actively carried out charity work for the poor and also became bishop of Rouen.  

 

열정과 겸손으로 직무를 수행했던 그는 퐁트넬(Fontenelle) 수도원에 자신을 묻어달라는 부탁과 함께 오몽(Hautmont) 수도원에서 수도승들과 마지막 미사를 봉헌하고 그들을 축복한 후 십자성호를 긋고 평화로이 선종하였다.

He performed his duties with passion and humility, and requested that he be buried at the Fontenelle Monastery. He celebrated his last mass with the monks at the Hautmont Monastery, blessed them, made the sign of the cross, and died peacefully.
