누르시아의 성 베네딕투스(Saint Benedict of Nursia)의 쌍둥이 누이동생인 성녀 스콜라스티카(Saint Scholastica)는 이탈리아의 부유한 귀족 가문의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Scholastica, the twin sister of Saint Benedict of Nursia, was born as the daughter of a wealthy Italian noble family. 

 

스콜라스티카(Scholastica)의 의미는 ‘수사(修辭) 전문가, 연설가’를 뜻한다.

Scholastica means ‘expert in rhetoric, orator’. 

 

그녀는 신심 깊은 가정에서 어릴 때부터 하느님께 봉헌한 사람으로 살아왔다. 그 후 그녀는 오빠가 동굴에서 은수자로 생활할 때 오빠처럼 일생을 하느님께 봉헌할 결심을 하고 결혼을 거부하였다.

She lived as a person devoted to God from a young age in a religious family. After that, she decided to dedicate her life to God like her brother when he was living as a hermit in a cave, and refused to get married. 

 

그녀는 아버지의 허락을 받고 자기 몫의 재산을 모두 가난한 이들에게 나눠준 후 초막을 짓고 은수 생활을 시작했다.

After receiving permission from her father and giving away all of her property to the poor, she built a booth and began living as a hermit. 

 

그녀가 처음부터 혼자 생활했는지 아니면 공동생활을 했는지는 분명하지 않지만 점차 그녀와 같이 생활하려는 이들이 모여들었다.

It is not clear whether she lived alone or communally from the beginning, but gradually people began to gather to live with her. 

 

그 당시 그녀는 일 년에 한두 번 정도 오빠를 만나 기도 생활의 도움을 받은 것 같다.

At that time, she seemed to have met her brother once or twice a year and received help in her prayer life. 

 

그녀의 오빠가 몬테카시노에 대수도원을 설립한 뒤 그곳에서 남쪽으로 약 8km 정도 떨어진 곳에 베네딕토 수녀원(Benedictines nuns)을 설립하여 그녀에게 맡겼다.

After her brother founded an abbey in Montecassino, he founded a Benedictine nuns about 8km south of there and entrusted it to her. 

 

그래서 그녀는 베네딕토 수녀원(Benedictines nuns)의 첫 번째 수녀이자 원장이 되었다.

So she became the first nun and prioress of the Benedictine nuns. 

 

또한 이들 남매의 유명한 일화가 하나 전해져 온다. 

There is also a famous anecdote about these siblings. 

 

쌍둥이 남매의 담화

 

그녀가 마지막으로 오빠를 만났을 때 그녀는 예년과 같이 수도원에 들어갈 수 없었기 때문에 오빠는 몇몇 수도사들을 데리고 나와 수도원에서 약간 떨어진 어느 집에서 만났다. 

The last time she saw her brother, she could not enter the monastery like in previous years, so her brother took some monks with him and they met in a house some distance away from the monastery. 

 

그들은 만나서 늘 하던 대로 함께 기도하고 영적 담화를 나누었다. 밤이 되자 그녀는 오빠에게 다음 날 아침까지 함께 있기를 간청했으나 오빠는 수도회 규칙에 충실해야 한다며 거절하였다.

They met and prayed together and had spiritual conversations as they always did. At night, she begged her brother to stay with her until the next morning, but he refused, insisting that he must remain faithful to the rules of the order. 

 

그래서 그녀가 눈물을 흘리며 잠시 기도를 하자 곧 세찬 비바람이 몰아쳐서 오빠와 수도사들은 밖으로 나갈 수가 없었다.

So she shed tears and prayed for a while, and soon a strong rainstorm came, so her brother and the monks could not go outside. 

 

할 수 없이 그대로 머물게 된 오빠는 여동생에게 다음과 같이 말했다. “누이야, 전능하신 하느님께서 너의 뜻을 허락하셨구나. 대체 네가 무엇을 했느냐?” 

The older brother had no choice but to stay and said to his younger sister: “Sister, Almighty God has granted your will. “What on earth have you done?” 

 

그녀는 다음과 같이 대답하였다. “오빠는 제 말을 귀담아듣지 않았지만, 주님께서는 제 말을 귀담아들으셨습니다. 자, 이제 나가서 수도원으로 돌아가 보시지요.”

She answered: “My brother did not listen to me, but the Lord listened to me. Now, go out and return to the monastery.” 

 

이렇게 해서 남매는 밤새도록 영적인 생활과 천상 생활의 기쁨에 관해 이야기를 나누었다. 

Thus the brother and sister talked all night long about the spiritual life and the joys of heavenly life. 

 

이 마지막 만남이 있은 지 3일 후 성녀 스콜라스티카(Saint Scholastica)는 선종하였다.

Three days after this last meeting, Saint Scholastica died. 

 

이날 오빠는 수도원에서 기도하던 중 창밖으로 동생이 있는 수녀원에서 하얀 비둘기 한 마리가 하늘로 올라가는 것을 보고 동생이 하느님께로 돌아갔음을 알게 되었다. 

On this day, while praying at the monastery, my brother saw a white dove rising into the sky outside the window of the convent where his brother was staying, and he knew that his sister had returned to God.
