성 율리아노(Saint Julian the Hospitaller)는 귀족 집안에서 태어났다. 부모는 아들이 자라 훌륭한 장수나 덕망 높은 성직자가 될 것으로 믿었다.

Saint Julian the Hospitaller was born into a noble family. The parents believed that their son would grow up to be a great general or a virtuous priest. 

 

어느 날 청년이 된 그는 사냥을 나갔다가 수사슴 한 마리를 발견하고 활시위를 당겼다. 화살에 맞은 수사슴은 죽어가면서 그에게 언젠가는 부모를 죽이게 될 것이라는 무서운 말을 남겼다.

One day, as a young man, he went out hunting, found a stag, and pulled his bowstring. As the stag, hit by an arrow, was dying, he left behind scary words to him that one day he would kill his parents. 

 

그는 그 말을 믿지 않으면서도 한편으로는 두려운 마음에 가능한 한 부모로부터 멀리 떨어진 곳으로 떠났다. 낯선 곳에서 한 왕자 밑에서 일하며 명성도 얻고 기사 작위도 받았다. 그리고 아름다운 여인을 만나 결혼도 했다.

Although he did not believe it, he was also afraid, so he went as far away from his parents as possible. Working for a prince in an unfamiliar place, he gained fame and was even knighted. And he met a beautiful woman and got married. 

 

그런데 그의 부모는 갑자기 집을 떠난 아들을 찾기 위해 전국을 헤매고 다녔다. 마침내 아들이 가정을 이루고 사는 성에 도착했는데 마침 아들이 집에 없었다.

However, his parents wandered around the country looking for their son who suddenly left home. Finally, I arrived at the castle where my son started his family, but my son was not at home. 

 

그의 아내는 그들의 이야기를 듣고 남편의 부모임을 알고는 정성을 다해 모셨다. 그리고 자신들의 침대를 내어주고 다른 방으로 가서 잤다. 

His wife listened to their story, realized that they were her husband's parents, and served them with all her heart. Then they gave up their own beds and went to sleep in another room. 

 

뒤늦게 일을 마치고 돌아온 그는 자신의 침대에 웬 남녀가 누워 있는 것을 보고는 아내가 다른 남자와 잠자리에 든 것으로 오해하고는 분노를 이기지 못해 칼을 뽑아 그들을 죽였다. 

When he returned from work late, he saw a man and a woman lying on his bed. He misunderstood that his wife had slept with another man, and unable to overcome his anger, he pulled out a knife and killed them.  

 

그때 아내가 침실로 들어오다가 그 광경을 보고 놀라서 부모님께 부부의 침실을 내어 드린 사실을 말했다.

At that time, my wife came into the bedroom and was surprised at what she saw, so she told her parents that she had given up the couple's bedroom. 

 

한순간의 오해와 분노를 이기지 못해 부모를 죽인 죄책감에 성 율리아누스는 속죄하기 위해 아내와 함께 로마를 순례한 후 집으로 돌아가지 않았다.

Feeling guilty for killing his parents due to a moment of misunderstanding and anger, Saint Julian went on a pilgrimage to Rome with his wife to atone and did not return home. 

 

이후 그는 로마로 들어가는 길목인 어느 강변에 여행자들을 위한 숙소를 마련해 순례자들을 도우며 보속의 삶을 살았다. 

Afterwards, he lived a life of penance by helping pilgrims by setting up lodgings for travelers on the banks of a river on the way to Rome. 

 

그러던 어느 날 추위로 인해 동사 직전에 있던 한 나병환자를 맞이해 자신들의 침실을 내어주고 지극 정성으로 돌보아 주자 그는 천사로 변했다. 그리고 예수 그리스도께서 그대의 죄를 이미 용서하셨다는 말을 남기고 사라졌다. 

Then one day, they welcomed a leper who was on the verge of death due to the cold, gave them their bedroom, and took care of him with utmost sincerity, and he turned into an angel. And he disappeared, leaving behind the words that Jesus Christ has already forgiven your sins.
