“로마 순교록”은 2월 14일 목록에서 두 명의 성 발렌티노(Saint Valentine) 순교자에 대해 기록하였다. 그런데 이 두 명의 순교자가 실제로 현존했는지는 학자들에 따라 주장이 다르다. 

The “Roman Martyrology” records two martyrs of Saint Valentine in its February 14 list. However, scholars have different opinions as to whether these two martyrs actually existed. 

 

중세의 대표적 성인전인 황금 전설”(Legenda aurea) 등에 전해져 오는 이야기에 따르면, 당시 클라우디우스 황제가 군사력 강화를 위해 금혼령을 내렸고, 이로 인해 많은 젊은이가 결혼하지 못해 어려움을 겪었다고 한다.

According to the story told in the “Golden Legend” (Legenda aurea), a representative medieval hagiography, Emperor Claudius at the time issued a ban on marriage to strengthen military power, and as a result, many young people suffered from difficulties getting married. 

 

평소 가난하고 병든 이들과 고통받는 이들을 도와주던 성 발렌티노(Saint Valentine)는 비밀리에 연인들의 결혼식을 주례하다가 체포되어 황제에게 끌려가 배교를 강요당했다.

Saint Valentine, who usually helped the poor, the sick, and the suffering, was arrested while secretly officiating the wedding of lovers, and was taken to the emperor and forced into apostasy. 

 

그러나 그는 황제 앞에서도 당당히 그리스도의 가르침을 전하며 오히려 황제의 개종을 권유하기도 했다. 결국 그는 그리스도교 신자라는 죄목으로 아스테리우스(Asterius)라는 로마의 재판관에게 넘겨졌다.

However, he proudly preached the teachings of Christ in front of the emperor and even encouraged the emperor to convert. Eventually, he was handed over to a Roman judge named Asterius on the charge of being a Christian. 

 

그는 아스테리우스(Asterius) 재판관과 그리스도교 신앙과 예수님에 관해 열띤 토론을 벌였다. 재판관은 그를 시험하기 위해 앞을 보지 못하는 자신의 수양딸을 데려와 만약 그녀의 시력을 회복시켜 주면 무엇이든 들어주겠다고 했다.

He had a heated debate with the judge Asterius about the Christian faith and Jesus. To test him, the judge brought in his blind foster daughter and said he would give her anything if it would restore her sight.  

 

그가 그녀의 눈에 손을 얹고 기도하자 아스테리우스(Asterius)의 딸은 기적적으로 다시 볼 수 있게 되었다. 

He placed his hands on her eyes and prayed, and the daughter of Asterius miraculously regained her sight. 

 

이에 감동한 재판관은 그의 말대로 집 안에 있는 모든 우상을 파괴하고 3일간 금식한 후 온 가족과 함께 세례성사를 받고 개종하였다. 

The judge was moved by this, and as he said, he destroyed all the idols in the house, fasted for three days, received the sacrament of baptism with his entire family, and converted. 

 

그리고 이미 체포되어 있던 그리스도인들도 모두 풀어주었다. 그러나 이 사실이 퍼져나가 황제의 귀에까지 들어가서 그는 참수형을 받고 순교했다고 한다. 

And all the Christians who had already been arrested were also released. However, it is said that this fact spread and reached the emperor's ears, and he was beheaded and martyred. 

 

그의 축일을 연인들의 축일로 기념하게 된 것은 대략 14세기부터이다. 연인들을 위해 몰래 결혼식을 주례한 그의 이야기가 전해지면서 그의 축일은 연인들의 축일이 되었다.

His feast day has been celebrated as a lovers' feast since about the 14th century. As the story of him secretly officiating weddings for lovers spread, his holiday became a lover's holiday. 

 

이날 연인들은 서로에게 특별한 형태의 카드나 편지를 주고받았다. 이날을 선택한 또 다른 이유로는 이 시기가 새들이 짝짓기하는 기간의 시작이기 때문이기도 하다. 

On this day, lovers exchanged special cards or letters with each other. Another reason why this day was chosen is because it is the beginning of the mating period for birds. 

 

이 전통에 따르면 매년 2월 14일이 되면 젊은 여인들이 자신을 흠모해 시중을 들 기사를 선택하면 그 기사가 젊은 여인에게 선물을 바쳤다고 한다. 

According to this tradition, every year on February 14th, young women admired them and chose a knight to serve them, and the knight presented a gift to the young woman. 

 

그러나 오늘날 많은 나라에서 2월 14일을 ‘연인의 날’ 또는 ‘발렌타인데이’로 부르며 주로 ‘초콜릿을 선물하는 날’로 지내는 것은 일부 상인들의 상업적 마케팅 때문에 생긴 현상으로 그의 삶이나 신앙과는 거리가 먼 풍습이다.

However, in many countries today, February 14th is called 'Lovers' Day' or 'Valentine's Day' and is mainly celebrated as 'Chocolate Gift Day', a phenomenon that occurred due to commercial marketing by some merchants and is far from his life or faith.
