성 파우스티노와 성 요비타(Saints Faustinus and Jovita)는 형제 사이로 이탈리아에서 귀족 가문으로 태어났다.
Saints Faustinus and Jovita were brothers born into a noble family in Italy.
트라야누스 황제의 혹독한 박해가 시작되었을 때 이들 형제는 용감하게 그리스도교의 교리를 가르치고 설교하였다.
When Emperor Trajan's harsh persecution began, these brothers courageously taught and preached Christian doctrine.
박해를 피해 은신 중이었던 브레시아의 성 아폴로니우스(Saint Apollonius) 주교는 그들의 열심함을 알고 형인 성 파우스티노(Saint Faustinus)를 사제로, 동생인 성 요비타(Saint Jovita)를 부제(Deacon)로 삼았다.
Bishop Saint Apollonius of Brescia, who was in hiding from persecution, learned of their zeal and made his older brother, Saint Faustinus, a priest and his younger sister, Saint Jovita, a deacon.
얼마 후 그들은 체포되어 브레시아의 옥에 갇혀 오랫동안 맹수에게 던져지거나 불에 던져지는 등 혹독한 고통을 받았으나 하느님의 은총으로 모든 위험에서 무사할 수 있었다.
After a while, they were arrested and imprisoned in Brescia, where they suffered harshly for a long time, including being thrown to wild beasts and fire, but were able to escape all dangers by the grace of God.
그들은 브레시아뿐만 아니라 밀라노와 로마, 나폴리 등지로 끌려 다니며 더욱 혹독한 고통을 당했다.
They were taken not only to Brescia but also to Milan, Rome, and Naples, where they suffered even more harshly.
나폴리에서는 손발이 묶인 채 바다에 던져지기도 했으나 천사들의 도움으로 기적적으로 구조되었다.
In Naples, he was thrown into the sea with his hands and feet tied, but was miraculously rescued with the help of angels.
그들의 용맹한 신앙과 하느님의 놀라운 은총으로 많은 사람들이 그리스도교로 개종하였다. 그러자 하드리아누스 황제가 직접 그들을 브레시아로 끌고 가 참수하도록 명령을 내렸다고 한다.
Because of their courageous faith and God's amazing grace, many people converted to Christianity. Then, Emperor Hadrian is said to have personally ordered them to be taken to Brescia and beheaded.
결국 이들 형제는 도끼 형을 받고 순교하였다.
In the end, these brothers received the death penalty and were crowned with the laurel wreath of martyrdom.
