[천주교 세례명] “노예 출신의 주교” 성 오네시모스(Saint Onesimus)

성 오네시모스(Saint Onesimus)는 성 필레몬(Saint Philemon)의 노예였다. 그러다가 주인의 재산을 훔쳐 도망 나와 로마까지 흘러들어온 듯하다.

Saint Onesimus was the slave of Saint Philemon. Then, it appears that he stole his owner's property and escaped, reaching Rome. 

 

새로운 세상에서 새 출발을 하려고 했던 그는 당시 감옥에 갇혀 있던 사도 바오로(Paul the Apostle)를 만나게 되었다. 사도 바오로(Paul the Apostle)는 그에게 복음을 전해주었고 그는 진심으로 회개하고 세례를 받았다.

As he was trying to make a fresh start in a new world, he met Paul the Apostle, who was imprisoned at the time. Paul the Apostle preached the gospel to him, and he sincerely repented and was baptized. 

 

그리고 사도 바오로(Paul the Apostle)의 ‘믿음의 아들’이 되어 옥중에 있는 사도 바오로(Paul the Apostle)를 정성껏 보살폈다.

And he became the ‘son of faith’ of the Apostle Paul the Apostle and carefully cared for the Apostle Paul the Apostle while he was in prison. 

 

사도 바오로(Paul the Apostle)는 편지와 함께 그를 성 필레몬(Saint Philemon)에게 되돌려 보내면서 그를 이제 종이 아니라 사랑하는 형제로 받아주도록 요청하였다.

Paul the Apostle sent him back to Saint Philemon with a letter, asking him to accept him no longer as a slave but as a beloved brother. 

 

그럼으로써 그가 종이 아닌 진정한 자유인으로서 참된 그리스도인으로서 살아갈 수 있도록 배려하였다. 성 필레몬(Saint Philemon)은 그를 종이 아닌 형제로 받아주었고, 그는 새로운 삶을 살 수 있었다. 

By doing so, we took care to ensure that he could live as a true Christian, not as a slave, but as a truly free person. Saint Philemon accepted him as a brother rather than a slave, and he was able to live a new life.  

 

그 후 그는 말씀의 설교자가 되었을 뿐만 아니라 에페수스의 주교까지 되었다. 그러나 그는 주님의 말씀을 전하다 체포되어 로마로 끌려와 돌에 맞아 순교했다. 

Afterwards, he not only became a preacher of the Word but also became the bishop of Ephesus. However, he was arrested while preaching the word of the Lord, brought to Rome, and stoned to death. 

 

사도 바오로(Paul the Apostle)는 이렇게 그를 소개하였다. “충실하고 사랑받는 형제 오네시모스(Onesimus)도 같이 보냅니다. 그는 여러분의 동향인입니다.”

Paul the Apostle introduced him like this: “I also send you my faithful and beloved brother, Onesimus. “He is your neighbor.”
