카이사레아의 성 팜필로(Saint Pamphilus of Caesarea)는 오늘날 시리아와 레바논 해안지대의 지역에서 태어났다.

Saint Pamphilus of Caesarea was born in the coastal area of ​​present-day Syria and Lebanon. 

 

그의 제자로서 유명한 교회 역사가인 에우세비우스(Eusebius)가 그의 생애에 관한 책을 썼지만 유실되어 일부 인용문을 통해서만 그에 대해 알 수 있을 뿐이다.

His disciple, the famous church historian Eusebius, wrote a book about his life, but it has been lost, so we only know about him through some quotations. 

 

그는 부유하고 존경받는 부모 덕분에 훌륭한 교육을 받을 수 있었다. 그 후에 그는 자신의 모든 재산을 가난한 사람들에게 나누어주고 고향을 떠나 이집트의 알렉산드리아(Alexandria)로 갔다.

He was able to receive a good education thanks to his wealthy and respected parents. Afterwards, he gave all his possessions to the poor and left his hometown for Alexandria in Egypt. 

 

그는 그곳에서 피에리우스(Pierius)의 문하생이 되어 교리학교에 다녔다. 그 후 그는 팔레스티나(Palestina)의 카이사레아에서 사제품을 받았다.

There he became a student of Pierius and attended catechism school. Afterwards, he was ordained a priest in Caesarea, Palestina. 

 

뛰어난 학식으로 당대 최고의 성서학자로 존경받던 그는 카이사레아에 성서 학교와 도서관을 세웠는데, 교회 역사가인 에우세비우스(Eusebius)가 이곳의 학생이었다.

Respected as the greatest Bible scholar of his time for his outstanding knowledge, he established a Bible school and library in Caesarea, where the church historian Eusebius was a student. 

 

그는 다양한 성경 사본과 책들을 구해 도서관을 채우고, 성경의 정확한 번역과 학문 연구에 활용했다.

He acquired various Bible manuscripts and books to fill his library and used them for accurate translation of the Bible and academic research. 

 

그는 307년 말 디오클레티아누스 황제의 그리스도교 박해 중에 팔레스티나의 총독인 우르바누스(Urbanus)에 의해 체포되었다.

He was arrested by Urbanus, governor of Palestine, in late 307 during Emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. 

 

그는 그리스도교 신앙 때문에 고문을 받고 투옥되어 2년이나 갇혀 지냈다. 그 후 그는 다시 심문과 고문을 받고 다른 신자들과 함께 참수형을 받고 순교했다.

He was tortured and imprisoned for his Christian beliefs and spent two years in captivity. Afterwards, he was again interrogated and tortured, and was beheaded and martyred along with other believers.
