피렌체의 성 알렉시오(Saint Alexis of Firenze)는 이탈리아 부유한 상인 집안의 아들로 태어났다.

Saint Alexis of Firenze was born into a wealthy Italian merchant family. 

 

귀족 집안에서 태어나 자라면서도 겸손한 자세로 신앙 안에서 성장한 그는 장차 성덕의 길을 함께 걸을 여섯 명의 경건한 상인 친구들을 만났다.

Although he was born into an aristocratic family and grew up in faith with a humble attitude, he met six pious merchant friends who would walk the path of holiness together in the future. 

 

전승에 따르면 1233년 8월 15일 성모 승천 대축일에 그와 여섯 명의 동료들은 함께 동정 마리아의 발현을 체험하였다.

According to tradition, on August 15, 1233, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, he and six companions experienced an apparition of the Virgin Mary. 

 

이때 동정 마리아께서는 그들에게 은수자의 기도와 고독한 생활에 대해 말씀하셨다고 한다. 그래서 그들은 즉시 가족을 위한 얼마간의 재산 외에 모든 것을 가난한 이들에게 나누어주고 참회와 기도에 전념하는 공동생활을 시작했다.

At this time, the Virgin Mary is said to have told them about the hermit's prayers and lonely life. So they immediately gave away everything they had, except what little money they had for their families, to the poor, and began a communal life devoted to penance and prayer. 

 

그들은 1240년 두 번째 동정 마리아의 환시를 보고 검은색 수도복을 입으며 마리아의 종 수도회(Order of Friar Servants of Mary)를 설립하였다.

They had a second vision of the Virgin Mary in 1240, donned black habit, and founded the Order of Friar Servants of Mary. 

 

그 후 그를 제외한 다른 여섯 명의 동료들은 모두 사제품을 받았다. 자신은 사제가 될 자격이 없다고 느낀 그는 끝까지 수도사로 남아 수도원의 살림을 책임지는 재정 관련 일을 담당했다.

Afterwards, all six of his colleagues except him were ordained priests. Feeling that he was not qualified to become a priest, he remained a monk until the end and took charge of the financial affairs of the monastery. 

 

그는 110세까지 장수하다가 1310년 2월 17일 선종하였다.

He lived until the age of 110 and died on February 17, 1310.
