피에졸레의 복자 요한(Blessed John of Fiesole)는 도미니코회(Dominican Order)의 신부이자 초기 르네상스 시대에 피렌체 양식으로 종교적 작품을 많이 그린 이탈리아 화가로서 ‘프라 안젤리코(Fra Angelico)’로 더 많이 알려져 있다. 

Blessed John of Fiesole, better known as Fra Angelico, was a priest of the Dominican Order and an Italian painter who painted many religious works in the Florentine style during the early Renaissance. 

 

그는 형과 함께 필사본 작업장에서 일했는데 그는 채색 화가로 교육을 받았다. 그는 기도 생활에 전념하는 신앙심 깊은 수도 사제이자 틈틈이 종교적 그림을 그리는 화가로 활동했다.

He worked in a manuscript workshop with his brother, who was trained as a colorist. He was a deeply religious priest who devoted himself to a life of prayer, and he also worked as a painter who drew religious paintings in his spare time. 

 

1436년에 피렌체의 산 마르코(San Marco) 수도원으로 이동하기 전까지 그는 피에졸레(Fiesole) 수도원에 머물며 많은 프레스코화와 제단화를 그렸다.

He stayed at the Monastery of Fiesole, where he painted many frescoes and altarpieces, before moving to the Monastery of San Marco in Florence in 1436. 

 

1445년에는 교황 에우게니우스 4세의 부름을 받고 여러 해에 걸쳐 바티칸의 성 베드로 대성당과 바티칸 궁내에 있는 여러 경당과 니콜라우스 5세(Nicolaus V) 교황의 방에 프레스코화를 제작했다.

In 1445, he was called by Pope Eugenius IV, and over the years, he created frescoes for St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, several chapels within the Vatican Palace, and the chambers of Pope Nicholas V. 

 

그의 이름이 ‘프라 안젤리코(Fra Angelico)’로 널리 알려진 것은 그가 천사 같은 화가라고 불리는 것에서 비롯되었다.

The reason his name is widely known as ‘Fra Angelico’ comes from the fact that he was called an angelic painter. 

 

그는 재능 있고 신앙심 깊은 화가로서 큰 명성을 얻었지만 매우 경건하고 가난한 삶을 살았다.

Although he achieved great fame as a talented and religious painter, he lived a very pious and poor life. 

 

그는 1455년 2월 18일 선종하였고 그는 예술가와 화가의 수호성인으로서 공경받고 있다.

He died on February 18, 1455, and is revered as the patron saint of artists and painters.
