성 클로드 라 콜롱비에르(Saint Claude La Colombière)는 프랑스에서 매우 신심이 깊으며 유복한 가문에서 태어났다.
Saint Claude La Colombière was born in France to a very religious and wealthy family.
그는 예수회(Society of Jesus) 대학에 들어가 공부하다가 수도생활에 대한 강력한 이상에 사로잡혔으나 얼마 동안 이를 억제하다가 끝내는 입회하였다.
While studying at the University of the Society of Jesus, he became obsessed with strong ideals of monastic life, but after suppressing them for a while, he eventually joined.
그는 성 프란치스코 드 살(Saint Francis de Sales)의 시성식 때 생애 처음으로 설교하는 기회를 맞이하였다. 그의 설교는 대성공이었다.
He had the opportunity to preach for the first time in his life at the canonization ceremony of Saint Francis de Sales. His sermon was a great success.
그는 특히 예수성심 공경에 전념하였고 예수님의 생애 나이와 같은 33세 때에는 세상에 대하여 더욱 철저히 죽어야 한다는 계시를 받았다고 한다.
He was especially devoted to revering the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and it is said that at the age of 33, the same age as Jesus, he received a revelation that he should die more thoroughly to the world.
그는 성녀 마르가리타 마리아 알라코크(Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque)를 만나 그녀를 지도하였다. 그의 다음 임무는 영국에서의 선교활동이었다.
He met Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque and mentored her. His next assignment was missionary work in England.
영국내의 가톨릭 입장이 최악의 상태에 빠졌을 때 그는 놀라운 성공을 거두어 영국 가톨릭 재건에 크게 이바지 하였다. 그러나 그의 이러한 성공은 많은 반대자들을 만들게 되어 투옥되었다.
At a time when the Catholic position in England was at its worst, he achieved remarkable success and contributed greatly to the reconstruction of Catholicism in England. However, his success created many opponents and he was imprisoned.
그는 비록 순교의 영광을 입지는 안았으나 영국에서 추방령을 받고 쫓겨나야 했다.
Although he did not receive the honor of martyrdom, he was ordered to be expelled from England and had to be driven out.
감옥 생활로 크게 손상된 그의 건강은 최악의 상태였다. 결국 다시 프랑스로 돌아온 그는 1682년 2월 15일 선종하였다.
His health, greatly damaged by his imprisonment, was at its worst. He eventually returned to France and died on February 15, 1682.
