스미르나의 성 폴리카르포(Saint Polycarp of Smyrna)는 젊은 시절 사도 성 요한(Saint John the Apostle)을 만나 그의 제자가 되었다.

Saint Polycarp of Smyrna was a young man named Saint John the Apostle. He met John the Apostle and became his disciple. 

 

폴라카르포(Polycarp)의 의미는 ‘결실을 잘 내다, 열매를 많이 맺다’를 뜻한다.

The meaning of Polycarp is ‘to bear good fruit, to bear a lot of fruit.’ 

 

스승으로부터 주님의 가르침에 대해 충실히 전해 들은 그는 스미르나(Smyrna)의 주교가 되었다. 

After faithfully learning about the Lord's teachings from his teacher, he became the bishop of Smyrna. 

 

그의 제자인 성 이레네우스(Irenaeus)는 자신의 저서에서 스승에 관해 짧은 전기를 전해주었다.

His disciple, Saint Irenaeus, gave a short biography of his teacher in his writings. 

 

“나는 그가 앉았던 자리와 가르쳤던 자리, 드나들던 장소, 그의 모든 행동과 외모, 사람들 앞에서 행한 연설을 설명할 수 있습니다. 그가 요한과 주님을 본 다른 사람들과 어떻게 교제하고 그들의 말을 어떻게 인용하였으며, 그들에게서 주님과 그분의 기적과 가르침에 관하여 무엇을 들었는지도 설명할 수 있습니다. 그는 말씀의 삶을 목격한 사람들로부터 전해 들은 대로 모든 것을 성경과 일치하여 이야기하였습니다.”

“I can describe where he sat, where he taught, where he came and went, everything he did, how he looked, and how he spoke in public. It can also be described how he interacted with John and others who had seen the Lord, how he quoted their words, and what he heard from them about the Lord and His miracles and teachings. He spoke everything in accordance with the Bible, as he had been told by those who had witnessed the life of the Word.” 

 

그는 사도적 권위를 지닌 사도교부(使徒敎父)로 불린다. 그는 의로움을 바탕으로 윤리와 도덕에서 그리스도인의 실천적 삶을 북돋우고자 했다. 그래서 금전에 대한 욕심, 탐욕, 중상, 거짓 증언과 불의를 멀리해야 한다고 했다.

He is called an Apostolic Father with apostolic authority. He sought to encourage practical Christian life in ethics and morals based on righteousness. Therefore, he said that we must avoid greed for money, greed, slander, false testimony, and injustice. 

 

그는 사도들로부터 전해 받은 정통 교리의 열렬한 수호자로서 이단에 대해 강하게 반대하였다. 그는 생애의 말기에 로마에 가서 교황 성 아니케투스(Saint Anicetus)를 방문하고 그곳의 많은 이단자를 교회로 인도하였다.

He was a fervent defender of the orthodox doctrine handed down from the apostles and strongly opposed heresy. Towards the end of his life, he went to Rome, visited Pope Saint Anicetus, and led many of the heretics there to the Church. 

 

로마 방문을 마치고 스미르나로 돌아온 그는 155년 또는 156년 2월 하순, 80대 중반의 나이에 체포되어 총독 앞에 섰다.

After returning to Smyrna after a visit to Rome, he was arrested in late February 155 or 156, when he was in his mid-80s, and brought before the governor. 

 

공공 경기장에서 함께 체포된 여러 신자가 순교한 후 그의 차례가 되어 그 지방 총독 앞에 섰다. 총독은 예수 그리스도를 저주하고 신성한 황제를 경배하면 살려주겠다고 회유하였다.

After several believers who had been arrested together in the public arena were martyred, it was his turn to stand before the local governor. The governor persuaded him that he would be spared if he cursed Jesus Christ and worshiped the divine emperor. 

 

하지만 그는 다음과 같이 말하며 단호히 거부하였다. “내가 86세가 되도록 섬겨온 그분은 나의 왕이며 구세주이시고 또 나를 조금도 해치지 않으신 분이신데 어떻게 배반할 수 있겠는가!”

But he flatly refused, saying: “The person I have served until I was 86 years old is my king and savior, and he has never harmed me in the slightest. How could I betray him?” 

 

총독은 그를 화형에 처하도록 명령하고 군중은 장작더미를 쌓아 올렸다. 의복을 벗고 스스로 장작더미 위로 올라간 그는 뜨거운 불길에 요동칠까 봐 기둥에 못 박으려는 병사들에게 다음과 같이 말하며 안심시킨 후 당당히 순교하였다. 

The governor ordered him to be burned at the stake, and the crowd piled a pyre for him. He took off his clothes, climbed on the pyre, and confidently died a martyr after reassuring the soldiers who were trying to nail him to the stake for fear of being shaken by the hot flames by saying the following. 

 

“염려 말게. 이 불을 견딜 힘을 주시는 하느님께서는 못 박지 않아도 장작불 속에서 버티어 낼 힘을 나에게 주실 것이네.”

“Don’t worry. God, who gives me the strength to endure this fire, will give me the strength to survive the pyre without having to nail it.” 

 

신자들은 불에 탄 그의 뼈를 모아 적당한 장소에 안장하고 순교자로서 공경하였다. 

The believers collected his burned bones, buried them in an appropriate place, and revered him as a martyr.
