데키우스 황제의 그리스도교 박해 때 가장 잔인하게 그리스도인들을 살해했던 총독이 있었다. 그 당시 성 네스토르(Saint Nestor)는 마기두스(Magydus)의 주교였다.

During the persecution of Christians by Emperor Decius, there was a governor who murdered Christians most cruelly. At that time, Saint Nestor was the bishop of Magydus. 

 

그는 그리스도인들뿐만 아니라 이교도들에게도 존경과 사랑을 받고 있었다. 총독은 자신이 다스리는 지방 전역으로 군인과 관리들을 보내 그리스도인을 찾아내 이교도의 우상 앞에 희생 제물을 바치도록 강요했다.

He was respected and loved not only by Christians but also by pagans. The governor sent soldiers and officials throughout his province to seek out Christians and force them to offer sacrifices to pagan idols. 

 

군인들이 도착한다는 연락을 받은 그는 자신이 박해의 주요 대상임을 알고 있었지만, 도시 밖에 있는 신자들의 안전을 걱정해 피하기보다는 집에서 기도하면서 군인들을 기다렸다.

When he received word that soldiers were arriving, he knew that he was a prime target of persecution, but rather than flee for fear of the safety of believers outside the city, he stayed at home and prayed and waited for the soldiers. 

 

군인들이 도착하자 그는 두려워하지 않고 당당히 군인들을 따라나섰다. 그리고 재판관 앞으로 끌려가서 심문을 받았다.

When the soldiers arrived, he was not afraid and confidently followed them. Then he was taken before the judge and interrogated. 

 

재판관이 그에게 힐문하였다. “그대는 황제의 칙령을 모르고 있단 말인가?”

The judge questioned him. “You don’t know the emperor’s edict?” 

 

그러자 그는 다음과 같이 대답했다. “나는 전능하신 분의 명(命)만을 알고 있소.”

Then he answered as follows: “I know only the order of the Almighty.” 

 

재판관이 배교하고 신상 앞에 희생 제물을 바치지 않으면 죽이겠다고 위협하자 그는 이렇게 대답하였다. “내가 두려워하는 것은 오로지 하느님의 매뿐이라오.”

When the judge threatened to kill him if he apostatized and did not offer sacrifices before the statue, he responded: “The only thing I fear is the rod of God.” 

 

그는 모진 고문을 당했다. 총독은 십자가의 주님을 고백하는 사람들도 같은 고통을 겪어야 한다며 그에게 십자가형을 선고했다.

He was subjected to severe torture. The governor sentenced him to crucifixion, saying that those who confess the Lord of the cross should also suffer the same pain. 

 

그는 십자가를 메고 처형장으로 가면서 주위에 서성거리는 사람들에게 이렇게 권고하였다. “모두 무릎을 꿇고 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 하느님께 기도하십시오.”

As he went to the execution site carrying the cross, he advised the people standing around: “Everyone, get down on your knees and pray to God in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” 

 

이 말을 들은 사람들은 신자와 비신자까지 모두 무릎을 꿇고 기도하여 총독을 놀라게 했다고 한다.

It is said that everyone who heard this, both believers and non-believers, knelt down and prayed, surprising the governor.
