로마의 성녀 프란치스카(Saint Frances of Rome)는 이탈리아의 부유한 귀족 가문의 딸로서 태어났다.

Saint Frances of Rome was born as the daughter of a wealthy Italian noble family. 

 

그녀는 13세 때에 결혼하여 40여 년 동안 이상적인 결혼생활의 모범처럼 살았다. 그녀는 자녀 일곱을 두었으나 둘은 어린 나이에 사망하였다.

She married at the age of 13 and lived an ideal married life for over 40 years. She had seven children, but two died at a young age. 

 

그녀는 어릴 때부터 금욕적인 기질이 강하였고, 다른 사람들의 고통에 대하여 깊은 애정을 표현하곤 하였다. 그래서 흑사병과 내란으로 인하여 사회가 혼란할 때, 그녀는 자선활동을 통하여 하느님의 사랑을 실천하였다.

She had a strong stoic temperament from a young age and often expressed deep affection for the suffering of others. So, when society was in chaos due to the Black Death and civil war, she put God's love into practice through charity work. 

 

또 다시 흑사병과 기근이 로마에 들이닥쳤을 때, 그녀는 이 재앙의 희생자들을 보다 효과적으로 돕기 위하여 자신의 보석까지 팔았다.

When the Black Death and famine struck Rome again, she even sold her jewels in order to more effectively help the victims of this plague. 

 

그러나 그녀의 집안에 재앙이 닥쳐왔다. 흑사병 때문에 아들이 죽자 그녀는 자기 집을 아예 병원으로 개조하였다. 불행은 계속 이어져 2년 후에는 그녀의 딸마저 사망하였다.

But disaster struck her family. When her son died from the Black Death, she converted her house into a hospital. The misfortune continued, and two years later, her daughter died. 

 

그녀는 건강이 나뻐진 남편을 간호하는 한편 그녀의 모범을 따르는 귀족 부인 등과 함께 자선활동을 계속하면서 세상 안에서 자선을 실천하는 새로운 형태의 수도 공동체를 이루어 살기로 결정하였다.

She decided to live in a new type of monastic community that practiced charity in the world, taking care of her husband, whose health was failing, and continuing charity work with noblewomen who followed her example. 

 

그 공동체는 성 프란치스카 로마나의 오블라티회(Oblates of St. Frances of Rome)로 알려져 있다.

The community is known as the Oblates of St. Frances of Rome. 

 

그녀는 수녀원에 입회한 후 선종하는 날까지 남은 4년 동안 엄격한 생활과 더불어 자선 사업에 전념하였다.

After entering the convent, she lived a strict life and devoted herself to charity for the remaining four years until her death.
