성녀 예수의 마리아 에우제니아(Saint Mary Eugenia of Jesus)는 프랑스의 경제적으로 부유한 비신자 가정의 딸로 태어났다.

Saint Mary Eugenia of Jesus was born as the daughter of a financially wealthy non-Catholic family in France. 

 

그녀의 출생 배경은 그녀가 장차 프랑스 교회 전체에 새로운 영성적 길을 제시할 것으로 보이지는 않았다.

Her birth background did not indicate that she would present a new spiritual path to the entire French church in the future. 

 

그녀의 아버지는 은행업과 정치 분야에서 큰 성공을 거두었다. 그녀의 어머니는 교육을 통해 그녀에게 풍부한 감수성과 강인한 성품 그리고 강한 의무감을 일깨워주었다.

Her father was very successful in banking and politics. Through her education, her mother instilled in her a wealth of sensitivity, a strong character, and a strong sense of duty. 

 

가정생활을 통해 그녀는 지적 호기심과 낭만적인 정신, 사회 문제에 관한 관심과 폭넓은 세계관을 키워갈 수 있었다.

Through her family life, she was able to develop her intellectual curiosity, romantic spirit, interest in social issues, and a broad worldview. 

 

뒤늦게 세례성사를 받은 그녀는 1829년 어느 축일 날 성당 미사에 갔다가 별다른 마음의 준비도 없이 관행처럼 첫영성체를 했다. 하지만 그녀의 첫영성체는 미래의 비밀을 예언하는 놀라운 신비 체험이었다.

After receiving the sacrament of baptism belatedly, she went to mass at the cathedral on a feast day in 1829 and received her first Holy Communion as was customary without any special mental preparation. However, her First Holy Communion was an amazing mystical experience that predicted the secrets of the future. 

 

그녀의 청소년기는 행복했지만, 전혀 괴로움이 없는 것은 아니었다. 어린 나이에 오빠와 여동생의 죽음을 겪으며 큰 충격을 받았고, 허약한 건강 상태와 말에서 떨어진 일로 인해 심각한 후유증을 겪기도 했다.

Her adolescence was happy, but not entirely without suffering. She was greatly shocked by the death of her older brother and younger sister at a young age, and suffered serious aftereffects due to her poor health and a fall from a horse. 

 

하지만 나이에 비해 조숙했던 그녀는 자신의 감정을 드러내지 않았고, 힘든 일들을 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 잘 알고 있었다.

However, she was precocious for her age, did not show her emotions, and knew how to accept difficult situations. 

 

그녀가 13살이 되었을 때 한창 성공 가도를 달리던 아버지의 은행이 파산하면서 모든 재산과 부동산을 잃었다. 게다가 여러 오해로 인해 부모님이 이혼하자 그녀는 사랑하는 어머니와 함께 살기 시작했다.

When she was 13, her father's bank, which was at the height of his success, went bankrupt and he lost all his property and real estate. Moreover, when her parents divorced due to various misunderstandings, she began living with her beloved mother. 

 

그녀의 어머니는 파리에 사는 가난한 이들에게 큰 관심을 가졌다. 그래서 그녀 역시 종종 어머니를 따라서 가난한 이들의 가정을 방문하곤 하였다.

Her mother took a great interest in the poor living in Paris. So she often followed her mother to visit the homes of the poor. 

 

불행은 아직 끝나지 않아 그녀가 15살이 되었을 때 어머니가 콜레라에 걸려 세상을 떠나고 말았다.

The misfortune was not over yet. When she was 15, her mother contracted cholera and passed away. 

 

괴로움 중에 진리를 찾으며 때로는 절망하기도 한 그녀는 마침내 절대자에 대한 회개의 갈증을 느끼고 초월자에게로 마음의 문을 서서히 열게 되었다.

While she searched for the truth amid suffering and sometimes despaired, she finally felt a thirst for repentance toward the Absolute and slowly opened the door of her heart to the Transcendent. 

 

19살 때 그녀는 수도원장 앙리 라코르데르(Henri Lacordaire)의 강론을 듣게 되었다. 그의 강론은 그녀의 가슴을 울렸고 이를 통해 그녀는 그동안 품어 왔던 많은 의문에 대한 해답을 찾게 되었다.

At the age of 19, she heard a sermon by Abbot Henri Lacordaire. His sermon touched her heart and through it she found answers to many of the questions she had been having. 

 

그 순간 이후 자신의 모든 정신과 나약함까지도 교회를 위해 헌신하고 싶은 열망에 사로잡혔다.

From that moment on, he was possessed by the desire to devote all his spirit and even his weaknesses to the church.

 

이런 순간에 그녀는 수도원장 콩발로(Combalot) 신부를 만나게 되었다. 그는 그녀에게 자신의 사업을 맡아주길 설득하며 하느님께서 새로운 수도회를 설립하기 위해 그녀를 선택하셨음을 일깨워주었다.

At this moment she met the abbot, Father Combalot. He persuaded her to take charge of his work and reminded her that God had chosen her to found a new order. 

 

결국 그녀는 이 모든 것을 하느님의 뜻으로 받아들였고 22살의 나이에 그녀는 ‘복되신 동정 마리아의 승천 수도회(The Religious of the Assumption)’를 설립하였다.

In the end, she accepted all of this as God's will, and at the age of 22, she founded ‘The Religious of the Assumption’. 

 

그녀는 오랜 역사 안에 쌓여 있는 수도 생활의 지혜를 현대인들의 요구에 만족감을 줄 수 있는 교육과 결합하고자 했다. 계속해서 그녀는 자신의 모든 힘을 미래의 선물과 수녀회의 확장을 위해 쏟아부었고, 그것은 그녀에게 평생의 사업이 되었다.

She sought to combine the wisdom of monastic life accumulated over a long history with an education that could satisfy the needs of modern people. She continued to pour all her energies into future gifts and the expansion of the Congregation, which became her life's work. 

 

그녀는 생애의 마지막 해에 신체적으로 어려움을 겪으면서도 침묵과 겸손으로 지냈다. 그녀의 생애는 완전히 그리스도를 중심에 둔 삶이었다.

She lived the last years of her life in silence and humility despite her physical difficulties. Her life was completely Christ-centered. 

 

그녀는 1898년 3월 10일 새벽 온화한 모습으로 선종하였다.

She died peacefully in the early morning of March 10, 1898.
