성녀 세라피나(Saint Fina)는 이탈리아 몰락한 어느 가정에서 태어났다. 어릴 때의 그녀는 매혹적인 모습으로 귀여움을 독차지 하였다.

Saint Fina was born into a ruined family in Italy. When she was young, she stole the show with her charming appearance. 

 

그러나 마음이 착해서 자신의 어려운 처지에서도 적은 음식조차 반을 나누어 남을 주곤 하였다. 그는 집에서 은수자처럼 살았는데, 낮에는 수예 등으로 가사를 돕고 밤에는 기도에만 전념하였다.

However, he had a kind heart, so even in difficult situations, he would share half of the small amount of food he had and give it to others. He lived like a hermit at home, helping with housework by doing handicrafts during the day and devoting himself to prayer at night. 

 

그녀가 아직 처녀일 때 부친이 죽었는데 그녀 역시 중병에 걸리고 말았다. 중병 증세가 있었고, 좋은 얼굴이 망가져서 추한 여성으로 변하였다.

Her father died when she was still a virgin, and she also became seriously ill. She had symptoms of a serious illness, and her good face was ruined, turning her into an ugly woman. 

 

그녀는 그 후 16년 동안이나 한자리에 누워서 고통을 받았지만 조금도 불평하지 않고 오로지 다음과 같이 말할 뿐이었다. “나의 상처보다 그리스도의 상처가 더 마음 아프다”

For the next 16 years, she lay in one place and suffered, but did not complain at all and only said: “Christ’s wounds hurt more than my wounds.” 

 

그 후 그녀는 자신이 늘 공경하던 교황 성 대 그레고리우스 1세(Saint Gregory the Great)의 발현을 보았고 다음과 같은 말씀을 들었다.

Afterwards, she saw an apparition of Saint Gregory the Great, the Pope whom she always revered, and heard the following words: 

 

“사랑하는 딸아, 나의 축일에 하느님께서 너에게 안식을 주시리라”

“Dear daughter, on my feast day God will give you rest.” 

 

1253년 3월 12일 그녀는 환시에서 들은 바로 그날에 선종하였다. 그녀의 무덤에서는 매일같이 기적이 일어나서 공경을 받고 있다.

She died on March 12, 1253, the very day she heard the vision. Miracles occur every day at her grave, and she is revered.
