[천주교 세례명] “자신의 형제들을 용서한” 성 루데리코(Saint Roderick)

성 루데리코(Saint Roderick)는 에스파냐의 사제로 그에게는 두 형제가 있었는데 그중의 한 명은 이슬람교로 개종했고 또 다른 형제는 그리스도교 신앙을 포기하고 냉담한 상태로 살고 있었다.

Saint Roderick was a Spanish priest who had two brothers, one of whom converted to Islam and the other who renounced the Christian faith and lived in a state of apathy. 

 

어느 날 밤 두 형제가 서로 언쟁을 하다가 싸움까지 하는 것을 보고 그가 끼어들어 말렸는데 이들은 오히려 그를 길가로 끌어내어 정신을 잃을 정도로 때렸다.

One night, he saw two brothers arguing and fighting, and he intervened to stop them. Instead, they dragged him out to the side of the road and beat him until he lost consciousness. 

 

그 후 이들 형제는 그가 그리스도교를 떠나 이슬람교도가 되었다고 떠들고 다녔다. 그는 겨우 목숨을 부지하고 도망칠 수 있었다.

After that, these brothers started talking about him leaving Christianity and becoming a Muslim. He barely managed to escape with his life. 

 

그 얼마 후 이 두 형제는 자신들의 형제인 그를 발견하여 그 지방의 관리에게 그리스도인으로 고발하였다.

Soon after, these two brothers discovered their brother and accused him of being a Christian to the local official. 

 

그래서 그는 투옥되었는데, 감옥에서 살로몬(Salomon)이라는 사람을 만났다. 이 두 사람은 서로를 격려하며 그리스도인으로서의 삶을 살다가 함께 순교하기로 결심했다.

So he was imprisoned, and in prison he met a man named Salomon. These two men encouraged each other, lived a Christian life, and decided to die together as martyrs. 

 

이들 순교자들의 시신은 강에 버려졌으며 주민들은 그들의 피가 묻은 조약돌을 모아다가 유품으로 공경하기 시작했다.

The bodies of these martyrs were dumped in the river, and residents began to collect pebbles with their blood on them and honor them as mementos.
