성녀 에우프라시아(Saint Euphrasia)는 귀족의 딸로 태어났으나 1년 만에 아버지를 여의고 어미니를 따라 같이 살게 되었다.

Saint Euphrasia was born as the daughter of a nobleman, but her father died within a year and she came to live with her mother. 

 

그곳에서 어려서부터 어머니와 함께 은수자들의 설교를 들으며 수도생활에 접한 그녀의 소망은 자연스럽게 동정생활을 하는 공동체에서 지내는 것이 되었다.

There, from a young age, she listened to the sermons of hermits with her mother and was introduced to the monastic life. Her wish was to naturally live in a community of virgins. 

 

7세 때에 어머니와 함께 방문한 수도원에 계속 머물기를 고집했고 떠나려 하지 않았다. 어린 그녀는 수녀원장께 다음과 같이 말하며 간청하였다.

At the age of seven, he insisted on staying at the monastery he visited with his mother and refused to leave. The young woman pleaded with the abbess, saying the following: 

 

"시키는 일은 무엇이든 다할 터이니 저를 이곳에서 내치지 마십시오. 만약 이곳 생활에 어긋나는 짓을 하면 언제든지 내쫓아 주십시오"

“I will do whatever you ask me to do, so please don’t throw me out of here. If I do something that goes against the way of life here, please kick me out at any time.” 

 

그 후 5년 뒤 어머니가 사망하자 그녀는 남은 유산을 모두 가난한 사람들에게 나누어 주고 세속과의 인연을 끊어버렸다.

When her mother died five years later, she gave away all of her remaining inheritance to the poor and severed ties with the world. 

 

그러나 자신이 사는 공동체의 내부 일이 너무나 힘이 들어 뛰쳐나오려는 유혹에 수없이 직면할 때마다, 그녀는 일주일 내내 음식을 입에 대지 않는 등의 온갖 고행을 통하여 이를 극복하였다.

However, on numerous occasions when she was faced with the temptation to run away because the inner work of her community was so demanding, she overcame it through various austerities, such as abstaining from eating for a whole week. 

 

그녀는 이런 노력으로 보여주는 인내심으로 인하여 동료들로부터 위대한 성녀로 높은 존경을 받으며 살았다.

Because of the perseverance she showed through these efforts, she was highly respected by her peers as a great saint.
