[천주교 세례명] “신심 깊은 아내이자 가난한 이들의 후원자” 성녀 마틸다(Saint Matilda)

성녀 마틸다(Saint Matilda)는 귀족 가문의 딸로 태어났다. 그녀는 어린 시절 헤르포르트 여성수도원(Herford Abbey)에 있던 같은 이름의 할머니 밑에서 교육받으며 자랐다.

Saint Matilda was born as the daughter of a noble family. As a child, she was educated by her grandmother of the same name at Herford Abbey. 

 

909년 그녀는 결혼했고 남편이 독일의 왕이 되자 그녀는 여왕이 되었다. 936년 남편이 사망하자 과부가 된 그녀는 둘째 아들이 왕위를 계승하기를 원했다.

In 909 she married, and when her husband became king of Germany, she became queen. After her husband died in 936, she became a widow and wanted her second son to succeed to the throne. 

 

그러나 남편의 뜻을 따르며 장남이 왕위를 계승하는 것을 받아들이고 지지했으나 그런 연유로 장남으로부터 심한 푸대접을 받았다.

However, she followed her husband's wishes and accepted and supported her eldest son's succession to the throne, but for that reason, she received harsh treatment from her eldest son. 

 

신심이 뛰어났던 그녀는 자선사업에 힘을 쏟기 시작했고 아들들로부터 지나친 자선으로 가난한 사람들에게 국가 수익을 내준다는 비판을 받았다.

She, who was highly religious, began to focus on charity work and was criticized by her sons for giving state revenue to the poor through excessive charity. 

 

이런 와중에도 그녀는 지참금과 남편에게 물려받은 재산으로 베네딕토회를 세우고 가난한 사람들을 후원하며 주로 수도원에 머물면서 기도생활에 전념하였다.

Despite this, she established the Benedictine Order with her dowry and the property she inherited from her husband, supported the poor, and devoted herself to a life of prayer while mainly staying at the monastery. 

 

그녀는 죽기 전에 장남과 화해하고 선종하여 남편의 무덤 옆에 묻혔다.

Before she died, she reconciled with her eldest son, died, and was buried next to her husband's grave.
