전설에 의하면 성 론지노(Saint Longinus)는 빌라도의 지시를 받고 예수님께서 매달린 십자가 곁에 서 있다가 창으로 주님이 옆구리를 찌른 백인대장으로, 상처에서 피와 물이 흘러나오는 것을 본 사람이다.

According to legend, Saint Longinus was a centurion who, under Pilate's instructions, stood next to the cross on which Jesus was hanging and stabbed Jesus in the side with a spear. He saw blood and water flowing from the wound. 

 

또한 그는 다음과 같이 말했다. "참으로 이분은 하느님의 아드님이셨다."

Also he said: “Truly this man was the Son of God.” 

 

그 후 그가 병들어 누웠을 때, 창에 묻은 주님의 피를 자기 눈에 갖다 대자마자 병이 낫는 것을 보고 군인 생활을 포기한 뒤 사도들의 제자가 되었다.

Afterwards, when he was lying sick, he put the blood of the Lord on his spear to his eyes and saw that his illness was cured. He gave up his life as a soldier and became a disciple of the apostles. 

 

이후 그는 카파도키아(Cappadocia)의 카이사레아(Caesarea)에서 수도생활을 하면서 지내다가 박해를 맞이했다.

Afterwards, he lived as a monk in Caesarea, Cappadocia, where he faced persecution. 

 

집정관은 그의 이를 뽑고 혀를 잘랐지만 그의 설교를 중단시킬 수는 없었다고 한다. 그는 도끼를 들고 이교도들의 신상을 부수며 다음과 같이 외쳤다. "이게 무슨 신들인가!"

It is said that the consul pulled out his teeth and cut out his tongue, but could not stop him from preaching. He took an ax and smashed the pagan idol, shouting: “What gods are these!” 

 

그러자 집정관은 그를 즉석에서 참수하도록 명령했다. 그의 유해는 만투아(Mantua)에 보존되어 있으며 성인으로서 공경을 받고 있다.

The consul then ordered him to be beheaded on the spot. His remains are preserved in Mantua and he is revered as a saint.
