세비야의 성 레안데르(Saint Leander of Seville)는 에스파냐에서 귀족 가문으로 태어났다. 세비야에 정착한 그는 그곳에서 베네딕토회(Benedictine) 수도사가 되었다.

Saint Leander of Seville was born into a noble family in Spain. He settled in Seville and became a Benedictine monk there. 

 

그는 설교와 저술 활동을 통해서 아리우스주의(Arianism) 이단에 맞서 가톨릭의 정통교리를 수호하고자 노력했다.

He tried to protect orthodox Catholic doctrine against the heresy of Arianism through his preaching and writing activities. 

 

578년경 세비야의 주교가 된 그는 학교를 설립해 세비야를 가톨릭 교육의 중심지로 만들었다.

He became bishop of Seville around 578 and established a school, making Seville a center of Catholic education. 

 

그 무렵 아리우스 이단에 빠진 서고트족의 왕의 아들을 만나 가톨릭으로 개종하도록 도와주었다. 그리고 그 왕자는 자신의 아버지와 이단에 대항하다가 전투에서 패해 감옥에 갇혔다.

At that time, he met the son of a Visigoth king who had fallen into the Arian heresy and helped him convert to Catholicism. And while the prince fought against heresy with his father, he was defeated in battle and imprisoned. 

 

그 과정에서 왕자를 도왔던 그와 가톨릭 신자들은 추방을 당해 유배 생활을 하게 되었다. 왕의 아들은 정통 신앙을 지키다가 아버지에 의해 죽임을 당했고 이듬해 왕도 병에 걸려 죽었는데 임종하기 전에 눈물로 회개하며 가톨릭 신앙을 받아들였다고 한다.

In the process, he and the Catholics who helped the prince were expelled and lived in exile. The king's son was killed by his father while maintaining the orthodox faith, and the king also fell ill and died the following year. It is said that he repented in tears and accepted the Catholic faith before his death. 

 

그는 왕위를 계승한 왕자의 동생의 개종을 돕고 이단에 빠진 주교들의 회개를 위해서도 활발한 활동을 전개해 큰 성공을 거두었다.

He achieved great success by assisting in the conversion of the younger brother of the prince who succeeded to the throne, and by actively promoting the conversion of bishops who had fallen into heresy.
