성 파트리치오(Saint Patrick)는 로마제국의 귀족 가문에서 태어난 것으로 여겨진다. 파트리치오(Patrick)의 의미는 ‘귀족’이라는 뜻이다.

Saint Patrick is believed to have been born into a noble family in the Roman Empire. The meaning of Patrick is ‘noble’. 

 

그는 16세 때에 아일랜드 해적들에게 붙잡혀 노예로 팔려 6년 동안 양치기로 생활했다.

He was captured by Irish pirates at the age of 16, sold into slavery, and lived as a shepherd for six years. 

 

하지만 이 기간에 열정적 신앙심을 갖게 된 그는 꿈속에서 천사의 목소리를 듣고 용기를 내어 탈출했고 항해 준비를 마친 배를 만나 우여곡절 끝에 집으로 돌아올 수 있었다.

However, during this period, he developed a passionate faith, heard the voice of an angel in his dream, gathered courage, escaped, found a ship ready to sail, and after many twists and turns, was able to return home. 

 

그는 6년의 노예 생활을 세속적 삶에 치중했던 자신의 회개를 위한 기간이자 앞으로의 사도직을 위한 하느님 섭리의 준비 기간으로 생각하게 되었다.

He came to think of his six years of slavery as a period of repentance for his focus on worldly life and as a period of preparation by God's providence for his future apostolate. 

 

왜냐하면 그 경험을 통해 아일랜드에 가서 신앙을 전하고 싶다는 열망이 자라났기 때문이다.

Because through that experience, my desire to go to Ireland and spread my faith grew. 

 

그는 성 게르마누스(Saint Germanus) 주교에게 4년 동안 사제가 되기 위한 교육을 받은 후 사제품을 받았다.

He was ordained a priest after receiving training to become a priest for four years from Bishop Saint Germanus. 

 

그는 주교가 되자 본격적으로 아일랜드 선교를 준비했다. 그는 지방 영주들의 도움을 얻어내면서 복음을 전파해 수많은 개종자에게 세례를 주었다.

When he became a bishop, he prepared in earnest for a mission to Ireland. He enlisted the help of local lords, spread the gospel, and baptized numerous converts. 

 

그는 그리스도교에 대해 적개심을 품은 수많은 원주민들을 과감히 만나 복음을 전하고, 여러 번 기적적인 방법으로 그들을 회개시킴으로써 아일랜드 전체에 그리스도교의 뿌리를 깊이 내렸다.

He boldly met numerous natives who were hostile toward Christianity, preached the gospel to them, and converted them in miraculous ways on several occasions, thereby deeply rooting Christianity throughout Ireland. 

 

행동과 실천을 강조했던 그는 복음을 전파하면서도 이교인을 차별하지 않았지만 늘 순교의 위험 속에서 생활해야 했던 그는 자신이 처음으로 지은 성당에서 선종하였다.

He emphasized action and practice and did not discriminate against pagans while preaching the gospel, but he always had to live at risk of martyrdom and died in the first cathedral he built.
