성 스테파노 하딩(Saint Stephen Harding)은 영국에서 태어난 것으로 알려져 있다. 그는 젊은 나이에 베네딕토회에서 교육을 받고 여러 곳을 순례하였다.

Saint Stephen Harding is known to have been born in England. He received education from the Benedictine Order at a young age and made pilgrimages to many places. 

 

로마 순례에서 돌아오는 길에 그는 은수자 공동체에 들어갔다. 그런데 수도원이 급속히 성장하면서 많은 기부금으로 수도원이 부유해지고 수도자들의 생활이 나태해지는 문제가 발생했다.

On his way back from a pilgrimage to Rome, he joined a hermit community. However, as the monastery grew rapidly, a problem arose as large donations made the monastery rich and the monks' lives became lazy. 

 

이에 수도 규칙과 청빈 생활을 더욱 철저히 실천하는 은수 생활을 위해 새로운 수도원을 설립했다. 이후 시토 수도원의 수도원장이 된 그는 재정적 문제로 어려움을 겪었지만 극복할 수 있었다.

Accordingly, a new monastery was established for the life of a hermit who more thoroughly practiced monastic rules and a life of poverty. After becoming the abbot of a Cistercian monastery, he struggled with financial problems, but was able to overcome them. 

 

그는 효율적인 수도회 운영을 위해 제도를 정비하였고 25년간 헌신하였다. 그는 1133년 연만한 나이와 병약한 몸때문에 사임하고 이듬해 3월 28일 선종하였다.

He organized the system to operate the monastic order efficiently and devoted himself to it for 25 years. He resigned in 1133 due to his young age and poor health and died on March 28 of the following year. 

 

그는 건축뿐만 아니라 엄격하고 단순화한 수도원 전례와 전례음악을 장려했으며, 성서학자로서 예술에도 일가견을 가지고 있었다.

In addition to architecture, he promoted a strict and simplified monastic liturgy and liturgical music, and as a biblical scholar, he also had a keen interest in the arts.
