성녀 발비나(Saint Balbina)의 생애에 대한 자세한 기록은 남아 있지 않으며 발비나(Balbina)의 의미는‘말을 더듬는 사람’이라는 뜻이다.

There are no detailed records of the life of Saint Balbina, and the meaning of Balbina is ‘one who stutters.’ 

 

전승에 따르면 겨는 감옥에 갇힌 사제들을 지키는 로마의 호민관의 딸로 외모가 아름답고 재능이 뛰어나 소녀 때부터 이미 많은 청년에게 청혼을 받아왔다.

According to tradition, Byul was the daughter of a Roman tribune who guarded imprisoned priests. She was beautiful and talented, and had already received marriage proposals from many young men since she was a girl. 

 

그러나 어느 날 그녀의 목에 나쁜 부스럼이 생겨 용모가 추해지자 부끄러움에 남의 눈을 피하며 살았다.

However, one day, a bad rash appeared on her neck and her appearance became ugly, so she lived a life avoiding other people's eyes out of shame. 

 

여러 가지 방법을 다 사용해도 고치지 못하던 중 그녀의 아버지가 그리스도교 신앙으로 인도되어 가족과 함께 세례를 받은 후 기적적으로 병이 치유되었다.

After trying all sorts of methods and failing to cure her, her father was led to the Christian faith and was baptized along with his family, and his illness was miraculously cured. 

 

그래서 그녀는 아버지의 모범을 따라 열심히 신앙생활을 했다. 부스럼 병이 치유된 후 옛 미모가 돌아오자 다시금 청년들의 구애가 이어졌다.

So she followed her father’s example and lived a religious life diligently. After the rash was cured and her old beauty returned, young men began courting her again. 

 

하지만 그녀는 이미 하느님의 사랑에 매료되어 더는 이 세상의 사랑에 흔들리지 않고 평생 동정을 지키며 살겠다고 결심했다.

However, she was already fascinated by God's love and decided to no longer be swayed by the love of this world and to remain a virgin for the rest of her life.  

 

아버지는 그리스도교 박해 때 체포되어 참수형을 받고 순교하였고 그녀도 아버지를 따라 순교하여 그 옆에 묻혔다고 한다.

Her father was arrested, beheaded, and martyred during the Christian persecution, and she is said to have followed him into martyrdom and was buried next to him.
