이집트의 성 요한(Saint John of Egypt)은 이집트에서 태어났다. 그는 목수였지만 25살에 은수생활을 하기 위해 가까운 산으로 가서 이후 40년간 은수자로서 살았다.

Saint John of Egypt was born in Egypt. He was a carpenter, but at the age of 25 he went to a nearby mountain to become a hermit and lived as a hermit for the next 40 years. 

 

함께 살고 있던 고령의 은수자는 그의 겸손과 순명을 시험하고자 1년 내내 마른 나무에 물을 주라는 등의 엉뚱한 명령을 이행하도록 시켰고 그는 이를 충실히 수행하였다.

The elderly hermit who lived with him wanted to test his humility and obedience by making him carry out strange orders, such as watering a dry tree, all year round, which he faithfully carried out. 

 

40세 즈음이 되었을 때 그는 해가 진후에는 아무것도 먹지 않고 매우 검소한 삶을 살았다.

When he was about 40 years old, he lived a very frugal life, not eating anything after dark. 

 

주중에는 기도하며 지냈으며, 토요일과 주일에는 그의 가르침과 영적 지도를 받고자 모여온 많은 사람들에게 방에 난 작은 창을 통해 가르침을 주곤 하였다.

He spent his days praying during the week, and on Saturdays and Sundays, he would give teachings through a small window in his room to the many people who gathered to receive his teachings and spiritual guidance. 

 

기록이 남아 있는 그의 기적 중에는 그가 축성한 기름으로 원로원 의원 부인의 시력을 회복시킨 일이 있다.

Among his recorded miracles is the restoration of the eyesight of a senator's wife with oil he had consecrated. 

 

또한 그는 사람의 마음을 읽는 경우도 있었다. 그를 만나기 위해 온 사람이 있었는데 그는 그 사람에게 총독과의 대화를 위해 잠시 기다려 달라고 했다.

He also sometimes read people's minds. There was a man who came to see him, and he asked the man to wait a moment to speak with the governor. 

 

기다림에 짜증이 난 그 사람은 그가 사람들 사이에 순위를 매긴다는 불평을 속으로 하고 있었다. 결국 그의 처소를 떠나려 할 때 그는 통역을 보내어 다음과 같은 말을 전하였다.

The man, annoyed by the wait, was internally complaining that he was ranking people. Finally, when he was about to leave his residence, he sent an interpreter to convey the following words. 

 

“가서 그 형제에게 참을성을 가지라고 전하십시오. 나는 총독을 보내고 그와 대화를 할 것입니다” 총독이 떠난 후 그는 그 사람에게 불러 물었다.

“Go and tell that brother to be patient. “I will send the governor and talk to him.” After the governor left, he called the man and asked: 

 

“왜 당신은 분노하고 마음속으로 나에게 죄를 돌리십니까? 당신과는 언제나 대화를 할 수 있고 당신에게는 구원에 이르는 길을 지도해주고 위안해 줄 수 있는 스승들이 많이 있습니다. 하지만 그 총독은 급한 현세의 문제들과 연관되어 있고 그런 급한 현세의 문제들로부터 잠시 짬을 내어 유익한 충고를 들으러 왔는데, 내가 어찌하여 당신에게 우선권을 줄 수 있겠습니까?”

“Why are you angry and blaming me in your heart? There are many teachers who are always available to talk to you and who can comfort you and guide you on the path to salvation. But the governor is concerned with pressing matters of life, and has come to take time out from those matters to hear useful advice, so how can I give you priority?” 

 

그는 자신의 죽음을 예견하고 마지막 3일 간은 아무도 만나지 않는 대신 기도하였으며 무릎을 꿇은 채 숨을 거두었다.

He foresaw his own death and prayed without meeting anyone for the last three days, before dying on his knees.
