성 디스마(Saint Dismas the Good Thief)는 예수 그리스도가 이 땅에서 활동하시던 시절의 유명한 도둑이었다.

Saint Dismas the Good Thief was a famous thief during Jesus Christ's time on earth. 

 

전설에 의하면 그는 도둑의 무리들과 함께 어린 예수님를 데리고 이집트로 피난 가던 성 요셉(Saint Joseph)과 성모 마리아에게 나타났는데 이 가족이 보통 가족들과는 다르다는 것을 깨닫고 모든 위험으로부터 보호해 주었다고 한다.

According to legend, he appeared to Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary when they were fleeing to Egypt with the young Jesus with a group of thieves. He recognized that this family was different from ordinary families and protected them from all dangers. 

 

그런데 기이하게도 33년이 지난 후에 그는 예수 그리스도가 또 한 명의 죄수와 더불어 십자가형을 당하게 된 곳에서 아들의 죽음을 애통해 하는 성모 마리아를 다시 만나게 되었던 것이다.

But strangely, 33 years later, he again met the Virgin Mary, who was mourning the death of her son, at the place where Jesus Christ was crucified along with another prisoner. 

 

십자가 위에서 구세주이시며 하느님의 아들이신 예수 그리스도를 알아보게 된 그는 지나온 자신의 잘못을 깊이 뉘우치며 예수님께 구원을 청하였다.

On the cross, he recognized Jesus Christ, the savior and the Son of God. He deeply regretted his past mistakes and asked Jesus for salvation. 

 

예수님과 함께 십자가에 달린 죄수 중 하나가 예수님을 모욕하면서 다음과 같이 말하였다.

One of the criminals who was crucified with Jesus insulted Jesus and said: 

 

"당신은 그리스도가 아니오? 당신을 살리고 우리도 살려보시오!"

“Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and save us too!” 

 

그러자 그는 다음과 같이 말하며 그 죄수를 꾸짖으며 예수님께 간청하였다.

Then he rebuked the prisoner and pleaded with Jesus, saying: 

 

"너도 저분과 같이 사형선고를 받은 주제에 하느님이 두렵지도 않냐? 우리가 한 짓을 보아서 우리는 이런 벌을 받아 마땅하지만 저분이야 무슨 잘못이 있단 말이냐?"

“Don’t you fear God because you too were sentenced to death like him? We deserve this punishment for what we have done, but what did he do wrong?” 

 

"예수님, 예수님께서 왕이 되어 오실 때에 저를 꼭 기억하여 주십시오"

“Jesus, please remember me when you come as king.” 

 

예수님께서는 다음과 같이 대답하셨다. "오늘 네가 정녕 나와 함께 낙원에 들어가게 될 것이다"

Jesus answered: “Today you will definitely enter paradise with me.”
