성 토리비오 알폰소 데 모그로베호(Saint Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo)는 에스파냐에서 부유한 지주 집안의 아들로 태어났다.

Saint Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo was born in Spain as the son of a wealthy landowner. 

 

그는 신심 깊은 가정에서 자랐으며 어려서부터 제대를 만드는 것을 좋아하였다. 그리고 그는 가난한 이와 음식을 나누기 위해 엄격한 금식을 실천했고 매일 묵주기도를 바치는 등 성모님에 대한 신심 또한 깊었다.

He grew up in a religious family and loved making altars from an early age. He also practiced strict fasting to share food with the poor and had a deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, praying the Rosary every day. 

 

그는 교회법과 시민법을 공부하였고 종교 재판관에 임명되었다. 그는 5년 동안 주어진 임무를 신중하고 성실하게 수행하였다.

He studied church and civil law and was appointed inquisitor. He carried out his assigned duties carefully and faithfully for five years. 

 

많은 사람들이 페루의 교회를 잘 이끌고 비신자들의 회개에 장애가 되는 문제들을 해결할 수 있는 인물로 그를 추천하였다.

Many people recommended him as a person who could lead the Peruvian church well and solve problems that hinder the repentance of non-believers. 

 

자기 뜻과는 관계없이 주교 후보에 오른 그는 왕에게 편지를 써서 자신은 그와 같은 일을 감당할 능력도 없고 평신도가 주교가 되는 것은 교회법에 어긋난다고 호소하였다.

He was nominated as a bishop against his will, and wrote a letter to the king, complaining that he was not capable of handling such a task and that it was against church law for a layman to become a bishop. 

 

결국 중책을 받아들일 수밖에 없었던 그는 리마의 대주교로 임명되었다. 부임한 그는 즉시 수많은 위험에도 불구하고 멀리 떨어져 있는 가난한 인디오들의 구원을 위해 최선을 다했다.

In the end, he had no choice but to accept the heavy responsibility and was appointed Archbishop of Lima. Upon taking office, he immediately did his best to save the poor Indians living far away, despite numerous dangers. 

 

그는 원주민들의 권익을 옹호하다가 정부 당국과 분쟁에 휘말렸고, 통치자들로부터 많은 박해를 받았다.

While defending the rights and interests of the indigenous people, he became embroiled in conflict with government authorities and suffered much persecution from the rulers. 

 

그는 이러한 모든 모욕과 공격을 이겨내면서 원주민에 대한 통치자들의 부당한 착취를 근절하고 가난한 이들을 향해 교회의 따뜻한 손길을 펼쳐 나갔다.

He overcame all these insults and attacks, eradicating the rulers' unfair exploitation of the indigenous people and extending the church's warm hand to the poor. 

 

하지만 죽음을 예감한 그는 자신을 돕던 사람들과 가난한 사람들에게 그가 갖고 있던 것을 모두 나누어 주라고 유언한 후 선종하였다.

However, he had a premonition of death and died after making a will to give everything he had to those who helped him and the poor.
