성 니콜라오 오웬(Saint Nicholas Owen)은 영국의 가톨릭 가정에서 태어났다. 당시 영국 정부는 가톨릭의 모든 종교의식을 불법화하고 가톨릭 신자들의 시민권을 박탈하고 있었다.

Saint Nicholas Owen was born into a Catholic family in England. At the time, the British government was outlawing all Catholic religious ceremonies and depriving Catholics of their citizenship. 

 

그는 아버지를 도와 목수와 석공으로 일하며 나중에 은신처(Priest Hole)를 짓는데 필요한 기술을 자연스럽게 습득할 수 있었다.

He helped his father work as a carpenter and mason and was able to naturally acquire the skills necessary to later build a priest hole. 

 

그는 헨리 가넷(Henry Garnet) 신부의 조수로 일하면서 사제와 평신도들을 위한 은신처(Priest Hole)를 고안하고 만드는 일에 본격적으로 착수했다.

While working as an assistant to Father Henry Garnet, he began in earnest to design and build a priest hole for priests and laity. 

 

그는 헨리 가넷(Henry Garnet) 신부와 오랫동안 일하면서 예수회(Jesuit)의 평수사로 입회한 듯하다.

He appears to have worked with Father Henry Garnet for a long time and entered the Jesuit order as a lay monk. 

 

그는 1594년 4월 23일 요한 제라드(Joannes Gerard) 신부를 돕다가 함께 체포되어 작은 감옥에 갇혀 고문과 심문을 받았다.

He was arrested on April 23, 1594, while assisting Father Joannes Gerard, and was imprisoned in a small prison where he was tortured and interrogated. 

 

하지만 그에게서 아무런 혐의도 찾아내지 못하고 몇몇 사제들과 단순히 아는 정도로 여겨져 부유한 가톨릭 신자가 대신 벌금을 내줘 석방될 수 있었다.

However, no charges were found against him, and he was considered a mere acquaintance of some priests, so a wealthy Catholic paid a fine on his behalf and was released. 

 

‘화약 음모 사건(Gunpowder Plot)’으로 가톨릭에 대한 정부의 탄압은 강화되었고 특별히 예수회(Jesuit)를 증오했던 정부는 예수회(Jesuit)의 연루 가능성을 찾으려고 노력했다.

With the ‘Gunpowder Plot,’ the government’s oppression of Catholics intensified, and the government, which especially hated the Jesuits, tried to find the possibility of the Jesuits being involved. 

 

그래서 그는 자신이 만든 은신처(Priest Hole)에 자신이 숨어야 하는 처지가 되었다. 그러나 얼마 지나지 않은 1606년 1월 20일 한 배신자의 밀고로 군인들이 들이닥쳤고 체포되었다.

So he was forced to hide in the priest hole he had created. However, not long after, on January 20, 1606, thanks to a traitor's tip, soldiers came and arrested him. 

 

정부는 그동안 그가 만든 은신처(Priest Hole)의 위치와 개수를 알아내기 위해 온갖 잔인한 고문을 자행했다.

The government used all kinds of cruel torture to find out the location and number of priest holes he had created. 

 

그러나 그는 신부들의 존재나 은신처의 위치 등 그 어떤 사실도 말하지 않았다. 결국 그는 사지가 뒤틀리는 고문을 받아 내장이 쏟아져 나오는 등 극심한 고통을 겪은 후 숨을 거두었다.

However, he did not mention any facts, such as the existence of the priests or the location of the hiding place. In the end, he died after suffering extreme pain, including being tortured with his limbs twisted and his internal organs spilling out.
