네포무크의 성 요한(Saint John of Nepomuk)은 체코에서 태어났다. 그는 이탈리아의 파도바 대학교로 유학한 후 그곳에서 사제품을 받았다.
Saint John of Nepomuk was born in the Czech Republic. He studied at the University of Padua in Italy and was ordained a priest there.
그는 자신의 고향으로 돌아왔고 자신이 맡은 중책을 성실히 수행하며 설교가와 고해 사제로도 활동했다.
He returned to his hometown and faithfully carried out his important duties, serving as a preacher and confessor.
전승에 의하면, 당시 국왕은 그리스도교 신자였으나 타락의 길을 걷고 있었는데 성격 또한 잔인하기 그지없었다.
According to tradition, the king at the time was a Christian, but he was on a path of corruption and his personality was extremely cruel.
그는 왕비의 고해신부로도 활동했는데 왕비를 의심한 국왕이 왕비의 고백 내용을 털어놓으라고 명령했을 때 이를 단호히 거부했다.
He also served as the queen's confessor, and when the king, who was suspicious of the queen, ordered him to reveal the queen's confession, he flatly refused.
그는 국왕에게 다음과 같이 말했다. “성스러운 고해의 비밀을 누설하는 것은 하느님께서 엄히 금하시는 것입니다. 그러므로 모처럼 명하신 것을 순종치 못함을 유감으로 생각하는 바입니다.”
He told the King: “It is strictly forbidden by God to divulge the secrets of sacred penance. Therefore, I regret that I have not been able to obey your command after so long.”
그로 인해 그는 국왕의 미움을 받게 되었다. 그는 국왕이 자신을 따르는 귀족들을 위해 수도원장을 자신이 원하는 사람으로 임명하려 했을 때 이를 강력히 반대했을 뿐 아니라 국왕의 개입 자체를 거부하였다.
Because of this, he came to be hated by the king. When the king tried to appoint a person of his choice as an abbot for the nobles who followed him, he not only strongly opposed it, but also refused the king's intervention.
이미 왕비의 고백 내용을 밝히지 않아 국왕의 미음을 샀던 그는 혹독한 고문을 받았다. 끝까지 고해성사의 비밀을 누설하기를 거부한 그는 불에 달군 쇠로 옆구리를 지지는 등 참혹한 형벌을 받았다.
He, who had already offended the king by not revealing the contents of the queen's confession, was subjected to severe torture. He refused to divulge the secrets of the Sacrament of Penance until the very end and was subjected to cruel punishment, including having his side beaten with a heated iron.
그 후 그의 두 손을 뒤로 결박하고 몸을 구부려 발을 머리에 잡아맨 상태로 산 채로 다리 위로 끌려가 산 채로 아래로 던져져 순교했다.
Afterwards, his hands were tied behind his back, his body was bent over and his feet were tied to his head, and he was dragged alive over a bridge and thrown down alive to become a martyr.
그는 고해성사의 비밀을 끝까지 수호한 순교자로서 고해자의 수호성인이자 다리 위에서 물속에 던져져 순교했다는 이유로 다리의 수호성인으로 공경을 받고 있다.
As a martyr who protected the secret of the Sacrament of Penance to the end, he is revered as the patron saint of penitents and as the patron saint of bridges because he was martyred by being thrown into the water from a bridge.
